I live in Mississippi and I just bought a Generac 4000 exl, I have never owned a generater in my life and I was wondering how well this unit is holding up? I have read some reviews on here that says they are not good and others saying they are good, it has a oil filter like a car and has electric start. I was hopeing I purchased a generater that would last me a very long time but im not sure now after some of the reviews, I have 90 days to carry it back its never been ran yet, do any of you guys have this very generater? Let me know you honest opinion about it, I am wondering if thisone has all ball bearings through it also, I know some dont, I was told this generater was suppose to be more of the industrial type inotherwords suppose to last along time.

The engine on yor genset is by far the most powerful, longlasting engine in the market for its size, do not ever let the carb set and gell up tot he point you cannot get it running without a carb rebuild, right now, there is no carb parts available, you buy the whole carb. As for the generator part, they are better than some, not as good as others. If this generator is going to see any long term use, then you are about $1000.00 short in what you bought. If this is an occasional use genset, then you did not get a bad set. If you are looking for something to run your house on, though, you are about 2500-3000 watts short of what you should really have. More than likely the genset you bought is a 4000w surge, about 3500-3600 continuous run. and if you run this genset at full capacity for very long, it will not last, it is not designed to run the full 3500-4000 for long periods of time. Gensets are like everything else mechanical, if you bought if for a cheap price, you get the message..... , if it cost you a pretty penny, then..... ...

Trey,
I do this kind of work for a living, and the problem with North Star is getting service after the sale. If you have a genset probelm, you may be in deep doodoo getting it fixed. Stick with a good name genset and then you will not have to worry about whether it will hold up.

I work at an rv repair shop we went to a class in wesconsin. this engine in the 4000 is great generac bult this in the 1970? sold it to sears and awile back took it back and it's on all kinds of stuff and work well the 4000 has one 20amp breaker one this is ok for a fridge and a coffe pot small fan but turn on the microwave and it will trip the breaker little small we have had good luck with them. and they are belt driven so its easy to ck,some genset power igniton to fire engine this dose not, engine runs but no electricit the generator, engine don't start it's the power unit only troble I had wrong was a crank seal and i think it got hot in RV conpartment. 5000 has a 30amp and a 20amp line

Why did you purchase the generator then research which kind is better after forking over the cash? Copper windings, cast iron sleeve and better if the block is cast iron too. Overhead valves, solid state voltage regulator, low oil shut off, quiet muffler and extended run fuel tank. Engine should be double the HP of the generator's CONTINIUOS KW rating. Eg. a 5KW machine is under powered with 9HP engine. 10-11HP is ideal. If it's missing any of those, walk on past and purchase another make/model.
