Need help identifing what happened to my 10hp 5000watt Generator I was using during hurricane Rita in Louisiana.
I have used this generator for 17 years and it has started on the third pull every time. It's a 10hp Tecumche (Sorry about the spelling).
It had been running fine for about three hours when I noticed it was misfiring a little, something it had never done in the past.
When I got to the unit I saw the entire exhaust manifold and muffler was glowing red hot.
I shut it down and let it cool for about an hour.
Restarted fine and ran for another 6 hours with a problem until the utility company power came back on.

Why would the exhaust glow red and it backfire?

Trey opening the high speed jet on the bottom of the carb a little. Also if you are looking at the exhaust system in low light or the dark it may glow. Remember a gasoline engines exhaust temp is about 1200 degrees F. This same thing happened to me when I was about 12 years old running Dad's 630 JD at dusk. The exhaust was glowing a dull red and I thought there was something wrong. No thing was wrong, it was just the low light conditions.

The only thing that had changed in my generator operation routine, was I bought gas from a small gas station that was open due to the hurricane. I used that fuel in this event. I had never bought gas there before and only two 5 gallon tanks were filled there. I usually buy big name gas, but this time I was forced to use this small gas station's gas.
I have 5 five gallon gas tanks and 40 gallon in my truck for reserve to use during outages.

Alcohol blended fuel burns leaner and hotter.

Mine was glowing bright red this summer. I found that part of the governor linkage had rusted while setting in storage and caused the engine to over speed. That all so caused an over voltage and a lot of blown MOVs and caps in my TV, VCR, microwave. I now manually move the linkage before I start the engine.
All so if your engine is running lean the exhaust temperature will go high.
