Have a Tecumseh HM100 10 hp generator engine and the spark has almost gone away. No spark at cranking speed,(rope start), Diisconnected all stop switch wires and oil level sensor wires and if I take a 1/2" drill with a socket on it and spin it with the plug out it sometimes will manage a faint reddish spark, not blue. Have sanded the flywheel, and cleaned the coil laminations also. Set the air gap at .012-.013 inch and every other dimension in and around there. Nothing makes any difference. Is this the module gone bad? Is there any such thing as testing this module, or do you just have to replace it with known good one? Also how to set the air gap as Tecumseh says to use their tool which is part # XXXXX for this. Will brass shim stock do? I set it by placing brass shim stock between the flywheel magnet and the laminations and centering the laminations over the magnet. Is this correct even though the magnets are almost not long enough to go completely across the laminations? Sure would appreciate some help. Thanks; Gene Davis

Gene - You've done all the right stuff. Sounds indeed like the ignition coil (module) is going away.

I know of no way to test it other than swapping with a known good one. A good module will give a fat, blue spark when pulling the rope starter.

Incidentally brass shim stock is fine for setting the magneto pole/flywheel gap. In fact pretty much anything the right thickness and non-magnetic will work (I use a business card...)

Good luck!
