Wisconsin AKN timing

I have Wisconsin AKN with a Fairbanks Morse FM XD1B7 magneto. I got her running but having trouble with lack of power and governor hunting. I check the static timing and the impulse is firing at TDC correctly but the running timing using a timing light is about 30+ degrees advanced. The book says it should be 17 degrees but it doesn"t say how to adjust it... and I sure can"t figure it out!

I pulled the mag off and don"t see a way to adjust the advance like the Wico type mag.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Jason

Jason,

It sounds like you have your answer but if you still need a manual for that engine, I believe I have a PDF copy of it.

The impulse is the advance when the engine is running and the impulse is not working. Could you have the wrong mag?

I'm not completely sure what you are saying in your first sentence but it's very possible this is a different mag. However, it came with the engine and has correct gear, timing marks, and mounts correctly.

When I rotate the engine by hand and the piston hits TDC (watching the timing mark) the mag impulse trips. When running the timing mark is advanced 30 degrees or so. The magneto mounts to the engine with two bolts but timing is not adjustable.

I assume the advance is built into the mag but is it adjustable? Maybe it is fixed and I don't have the correct mag...

What I was tring to say is that when the impluse engages this retards the timing so that the impluse trips at TDC so that the engine will not kick back. When the engine is running the impluse is NOT in effect and this is what advances the timing. I do not know of anyway to adjust how much the impulses advance the timing unless you can change the part of the impluse with the slot rhat rotates around to trip the dog. If you could find a narrower slot this would provide less advance but I DO NOT know if such a thing is available. You might contact magnetoparts.com

First, what are the numbers on the magneto? We can probably tell if you have the right one or not.

Second, is the marked tooth on the magneto gear lined up with the marked slot on the gear on the camshaft? If you have the wrong mag and/or the impulse is incorrect, the impulse may click at TDC but the gears may be lined up wrong. The impulse actually retards the spark, the actual timing is at speed.

I have some spare mags that you can possibly try swapping out if it comes to it.

Zira / Kent,

Thanks for your help! The engine is a Wis AKN spec # 67941 the mag is a Fairbanks Morse FM XD1B7

I have a manual for an ACN and BKN engine which says the running timing should be 17 degrees. Is this the case for the AKN? I checked the running timing with light and found its running around 36-37 degrees BTDC. From what I have learned so far, there are different impulse couplings for different lag angles. I haven't pulled my off yet to see what is stamped on the impulse. I don't think its worn, it seems to be in good shape.

Kent,

I work in a St. Louis suburb and live in Warrenton; about 1/2 way to Columbia from St. Louis city.

I have a couple of friends from Stockton and another one who is from Springfield.
