hey all,

I have a B&S horizontal shaft engine that is smoking, its white smoke that appears to be coming from the top of the drive shaft side. it also looks as though there is oil leaking in this area...any ideas of where to start? and is this a project with a service manual that a pretty average joe could take on?

Thanks,

KC

P.S. I'd hate to junk the engine and get a new one, surely its cheaper to repair than replace!

Forgot to ask if this engine has a gear reduction unit on it?

What Model, Type, and Code number? I think you may have a crankshaft seal out. The white smoke may be from blow-by, bad rings. If it is just the seal, on the PTO side this can be replaced without disassembling the engine. After the seal is replaced you can chech oil consumption of the engine and decide if you need to go futher. Does the engine run ok other than the smoke/oil leak?

Suprising enough a new engine costs less than most bandade rebuilds. The engine will have warrenty besides, last longer and run better without other old age problems. There are several shops online that sell new engines at deep discount. "jacks small engines" is just one of them.
