I have a 1925 JD 1.5 hp model E that I tinkered around with and got running today. It's in good condition and someone had taken it apart and then apparently lost interest and just stuck it back together without any gaskets or bothering to put things back in correct order. Anyway, I think I have all that resolved. They didn't fool with the governor. It cranks and runs but has a funny running order. What I mean is that it fires, spins a time or two and then the exhaust rod will work the igniter 4 times, firing on the forth strike and then repeats. It seems a little fast and the cadence is odd sounding. It will set there and do this all day but it doesn't sound right. I tinkered with the speed control but that didn't seem to change much. By the way, do you turn clockwise to speed up or is it the other way around? It's running at about 675 rpm, isn't that a little fast? Shouldn't it spin three or four times and then fire and only work the ingiter once each firing sequence? I am new to this and I don't know what the problem is, just that this isn't right.
Any help is appreciated.

Hi B, you are not getting enough fuel, it is double sucking and then some. Your choke plate should be only one quarter to one third open. The slower you are running, the more it should be closed. It needs a pretty good restriction to draw fuel up. If your check valve is failing the fuel will try to run back into the tank, and it will suck a bunch of times before it fires. It will also act the exact same way if your choke is open too far OR if your fuel needle is not open enough. The JD check valve is small and should have some sort of screen. Tightening the speed control knob increases speed and vice-versa. I like to keep them under 300rpm at least. Generally the smaller the engine the faster it runs. Get it hitting right and then fool around with the choke, mixture, and speed to get the longest lock-out and you will have it whipped. Bill

Based on what you and Bob are saying, it sounds like I am missing a check valve. It makes sense that it is having to suck three or four times to draw enough fuel up the fuel pipe. I'll have to pull that fuel line out and look it over good to see exactly what I have.
Thanks.

It is a "HIT-AND-MISS" engine, rather than the more modern throttle governed engines we are used to.

When it reaches it's pre-set speed, the governor latches the exhaust valve open, and does not allow the ignitor to trip, and the engine coasts along without firing until it's speed drops and the governor unlatches the exhaust valve, and again allows the ignitor to trip.

Hence, the term "hit and miss engine".

(You will notice it has no carburetor throttle shaft or butterfly, and no external throttle linkage.)

"It is a "HIT-AND-MISS" engine,"
Bob, I know that! But why does it activate the ingitor 4 times every other firing sequence? Why does it "miss" only 1 revolution before "hitting" again? I has seen some JD models E"s that sound like they are coasting for about 8 or 10 R"s between hits. That"s what I"m trying to figure out. Thanks

Is the fuel check valve at the end of the fuel line hanging down in the tank in good order?

Bob, I took the fuel line out to make sure it was clean. I didn't see anything that looked like a fuel check valve. There was a brass octagonal fitting there with brass mesh wire over the end. Is that the check valve? I removed it from the line and I could see right through it. Maybe the guts are gone. Am I missing some parts or pieces?

It's been probably 20 years since I've messed with one of those, but I'm almost 100% certain there's supposed to be a check valve down there.

You might want to check with Hit and Miss Enterprises... I see they list complet fuel lines.

Please post back as to what you find out!

Well, it was the check valve. I got a new one, put it on and it fired right up and runs great. Thanks for the help.
