Wisconsin AGND Starter

My dad bought a lil bitty trencher with a wisconsin AGND in it. The starter had a dead spot in it, and so we had a new armature put in. When bolted on, the drive gear has to be as close as possible to the starter housing to engage the flywheel. This is how it was when we took it apart. Did all of these motors use the same starter? It is a real heavy duty starter not unlike an automotive starter. The motor serial is 4118703 and the spec. number is 273139. Can anyone tell me anything from that? I ended up breaking the drive gear on the starter so I need to get at least a drive if not a complete starter. Even a starter number would help as the plate was knocked off ours.

I hope that makes sense and if I need to clarify something I can. I think I have pictures of this trencher around here somewhere but I dont know where.

AGNDs had different starters and different flywheels and ring-gears depending on the serial number. Some of the older starters were 3" in diameter and the newer ones 4" diameter. YA35, YA35,YA27, etc. Some drives were 9 tooth, some 11 tooth. YA39 was a Prestolite MBG-4124. YA27A was a Prestolite MDW-4304M with an 11 tooth drive. YA27B was a Prestolite MDW-4003M with a 9 tooth drive.

Re AGND electric start.

A loose, or previously loose, flywheel shroud may be the reason the gears are not meshing properly. The shroud is held in place by some short bolts behind the flywheel. If they have come loose in service the starter may have elongated the holes thus making bad starter pinion ring gear meshing.

On many Wisconsin engines with ring gear starter (as opposed to belt drive starter generators) there is also a starter support bracket bolted to the block. If this is missing it allows the starter to kick and twist thus exerting more force on the flywheel shroud. Another possible cause of the mounting holes being elongated and causing your problem.

Sorry, but I can’t remember starter makes and models though Prestolite hangs in the back of my mind. It could be 6 or 12 volt but as in another article 12 volt is OK for either starter though remember the generator voltage needs to match the battery voltage.

Hope this helps. More questions may prompt my memory more.
