I bought one from napa three months ago. They had to order it but was in in a couple of days. Cost about 70.00. Hold tip on center of shaft and reads just like tack, in rpms.

Harbor freight has one that does real good. You have to put a piece of reflector tape or paint mark on the shaft but it does fine.

Folks around here use them to set irrigation pump engine speed

I bought a contact/photo tachometer from MSC phone 1-800-645-7270 about 2 years ago to use at work to check shaft and motor rpm . It was about $250 or so with reflective tape and 6 different rubber tips. EXTECH model 00044412 is the one that I bought, other people that I work with bought Brown&Sharpe, Mitutoyo and a couple of off brands that I can't remember what they are. My one coworker has a Brown&Sharpe that is about 9 or 10 years old with out any problems to date. He likes my Extech as well as his Brown&Sharpe. Buy a Brand name one and it will last a long time because the foundry envroment that I work is real hard on tools. Thank you Joseph

Look for an optical tach. You put a white mark or tape on the shaft, point the tach at the shaft and read the RPM, works great. Available at machine shop supply. I think I saw one at Northern Hydraulics or Harbor Freight.
Good luck, Mike

Go to McMaster-Carr and enter "Tachometer" in the search window. They have what you are looking for rated to 4000 RPM.

I picked one up many years ago at a machine shop sale. I believe it is made by Lufkin. Check some machine tool dealers to see if they might still be available. Mine counts revolutions, and needs to be timed with a watch to get rpm.

Hi Chris,

Here's what one old-time, low tech one looks like. It is basically a revolution counter that you hold to the end of a rotating shaft and measure the number of revolutions during some standard time period as measured by a stop watch or second hand on a wrist watch. They work real well providing you have access to the end of a shaft or face of a piece of rotating machinery.

I have no idea where you can buy one now-a-days. The one I have is probably well over 50 years old.

Hi Chris,

Stewart Warner also makes them. Used to be avilable at WW Graingers or most Refrigeration supply companys.

Mine has a dial on the end much like reading a pressure gauge with a push reset. The only problem with this type of tach is any grease/oil on the shaft center will cause the rubber tip to slip thus giving a inaccurate reading. No big deal as I just used spray brake or carb cleaner before using the tach.

I also have a electronic Tach sensor that plugs into a DVOM with a type K connector that works well but needs a short piece of reflective tape on the shaft. I use this for setting large HVAC fan rpm as it can be pointed at a floresent light to calibrate the tach at 7000rpm. Floresent lights pulse at 7000/min. Cost was about $20 more than a mechincal tach or $110.

Hi Jim,

My son borrowed mine so I don't have the paper work to look at in front of me. From Jonstones Supply catalog;

UEI Model DPM2 Part# H24-687 $109.95
accuracy +/- 1.2%
rangeA 100 -1999rpm 1rpm resolution
rangeB 1000-19999rpm 10rpm resolution

you need a 200mVDC range on the DVOM
