Looking at getting a used S-1700 I-H chassis from a school bus, 25,000 GVW. Engine is Navistar 7.3L natural aspirated all mechanical. Trans is Allison 545 auto. Looking for feedback on this engine as to life span and efficiency. Currently has 160K miles on it and looks to be well maintained. All replies welcome.

These fellas below covered things pretty well.
I worked on them for Many years.
frequent oil changes, fuel conditioner is very important for the lubricity for the pump and injectors and DCA is coolant additive is extremely important.
If it is a Short Bus you may be ok power wise bus they are a little low on power for a long 19,000 dry weight bus.
Just seems to be to much driveline and differential.
A International DT466C with a MT643 allison would be a better catch if you could find one!

You should be in good shape with the Allison and 7.3. It's alot better than the newer Power Stroke engine.

I have almost 400,000 on a 91 model 7.3 in a F350. All that's been done to it was I had the heads rebuilt last year. It had 3 worn out and burned exhaust valves but was still running good and had power.

It missed a little when cold but after it warmed up it ran smooth.

My son has around 250,000 miles on his and never has put a wrench on it.

We both use Mobil Delvac engine oil and Mobil filters changed at 4500 mile and Lucas fuel conditioner every other fill up.

The farm did'nt get that many miles on the same identical pickups on the same jobs and the only difference was they use Shell Rotella oil.

Dr Evil is right about the turbo. If you put a turbo on it be sure to put new headbolts in. The 7.3 is bad about breaking the old style head bolts when a turbo is added.

Go to Your local Navistar truck dealer and buy a few of the coolant test strips made by FLEETRITE. Follow the instructions on the package and see how strong the concentration of Supplimental coolant Additive is... If it shows within spec. You know the vehicle was well maintained. IF it's REALLY low... RUN don't walk away from it. Those early mech. 7.3's caviated pretty bad for some reason... Great engine IF they were well maintained. Be best to keep it N/A... they weren't really desgned for a turbo. For more Info check forddiesel.com. LOTS of great info on the 6.9 & 7.3 IDI's as they're called.
