What would have to be done to use something that is 3 phase with normal 220 single phase electric.

Thanks,
Bill

Bill ,

Phase converters work well , have been using them for 25 years. Have a machine shop and automotive machine shop , runs every thing with no trouble. i have horizontal boring mill ( 3 in ),26 in lathe , 20 in lathe, more lathes and mills, also have 4 -3 ph hoists one of which is 44 ft bridge crane (all power ). The bridge has a 1 ton Wright hoist on it and will handle a full dressed cummins 855 cu in ( 2850 pounds ). Reliance electric manufacturing has one that is good for up to 7.5 hp for under 100.00 , put 250 to 300 mfd in the start system and attach a 3 to 5 hp motor for slave .

Just go to motor shop and purchase a new or recon 1 phase motor save a bunch of headache and pain in the a$$ problems! I happen to be an electrical contractor by trade and deal with this every day.

I don't think I'm gonna even bother with the lift at all, I don't want to take any chances. Of course, unless he wants to give it away, LOL!

Thanks again,
Bill

As the old saying GOES DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME.
Yes you can get the phase converter for a small fee but the cost difference is small to put a single phase motor on the lift.
We have and still use the converters in our shop to this day. Who ever told you that the converter would change single phase into 3-phase is going to kill you. It only makes up the third leg that is needed in making three phase. This is safe but not as safe as changing the motor.
Hope this helps .

Bill the little box the man was talking about was an inverter to change 220 single phase to 220 3 phase. Probably would be cheaper just to change the electric motor on the lift depending on the hp. Let me know what hp is on the lift and maybe i can find some prices for you.

Well I scrolled down and I noticed that there was a similiar question asked. I still don't really understand it though. What I was inquiring about is a lift that I was looking to buy and it was a 3 phase motor and the guy said you only need a little box in order to use it with 220 volt, this just didn't seem right. Seems like it could cost more than the lift is worth.

You can use a phase converter but they come at a big price. About $500 Are you are looking at 2 to $300 for a new motor. Their are ways to get by with out a phase converter but I would not try this on a lift motor.

As a 20 year phase converter user, I advise that a $25 expenditure will do it. After testing a commercial $700 rotary converter I found out what the difference between it and my homemade one was. The capacitors to start the motor, which I didn't buy, and using an old motor for conversion rather than buying a new one.

Not much here and no reason to spend a lot of money. My increased operation cost is 30 cents/hr and a slight decrease in power. Immensely cheaper than replacing motors in all my machinery.
