Hi all, bought my first welder last year, a hobart handler 135, great machine. A guy I work with has a 400 amp Licoln powered by a 4 cylinder wisconsin. He said it runs great and has 50 ft leads. I'm in the market for a bigger welder and my dad and I arent sure if we can wire in a 220V outlet into the garage, (not sure if we have any open spots in the breaker box for it) Plus I'd assume any fair sized stick welder might stress some of the wiring in our house? Our house was built in the 70's..dont want to cause any problems. Was thinking the lincoln could sit on the side of the garage on a pallet under a tarp. He's asking $800 or so, might be able to talk him down..is this worth it?
Seems like a good price for a welder that would practicly last me the rest of my life. How are parts and availibility? Wisconsin parts still available? Were they good welders? I'm thinking I'd be better off with this then any 220V buzzbox.
Thanks guys.

Hi Mike,

If that is a 400amp SA then it's worth about $3k with trailer on the used market. I don't believe that Linclon built a small 4cyl machine, 200A? maybe 250A? So either theres something wrong with the machine or your getting the buy of a lifetime.

Alot of guys try to thaw out water pipes with them and ruin the arc stability of the machine which The SA has the best arc stability of any machine out there. So look careful before you buy.

Run some 7018 on it and if it welds very smooth thens it's probably ok but if it spits and sputters walk away, well run away. Usually if it has no leads with it (someone just stole them the other night) then you probably are buying a pipe thawer.

Hi Mike,

Sorry I'm not up on parts prices or availability. Someone was having trouble finding a starter last week. I look at the want ads every now and again. There was a poster here several months ago that was from NM? that had parts and lots of them. Sorry I can't remember who!

Lincoln has pictures and manuals of all there machines on there webesite if that helps.

Hi mike,

The 400SA diesels go for $3k faster than you can get there. The gas 400SA are hard to find and don't bring as much.

Your 200SA still should bring $1500 or so.

Just look thru the Lincoln website. They show alot of manuals for the machines.

hey t-bone, where are you located, I am the one that was looking for a starter last week. I just bought three lincoln sae-400. two of them run just fine and one of course does not yet have a starter, but I am interested in selling them if you have a buyer or a market, or maybe know of someone who might be interested in one of them. I think i have found a starter for the third one but won't know for sure until it arrives. I,ve had one man ask about converting one to a generator, he talked of removing the welding parts and just having a power plant, if you have any info on that subject it would be appreciated! thanks , mike b
