7018 is designed for DC current. I fellow gave me a few rods sometime ago that he said was the equivalent of 7018 but intended for use with AC current. They burned very nicely and slagged over just like 7018. I then tried to use "regular" 7018 just for curiosity, but my 7018's acted just like I expected them to.

Any one know what rods the guy gave me?

Thanks

My dad has used 7018 dc rods with an ac welder. He has only had one welder that ran them like a dc would. It was a really old welder, before they started putting fans in them. The brand was a Sure Weld.

Hi Jerry,

The only 7018 AC I ran was Hobart and it worked soso but would not compete with Lincoln 6013 for AC work.

Lincoln 7018 was ok for DC, better than Hobart 7018 but neither can hold a candle to Chemtron 7018 for DC work. A huge difference in welding quality.

As far as I'm concerned Lincoln has the best 6010 there is. Lincoln aslo made/makes a 7018 soft start AC/DC rod. Junk!

All electrodes will work for what there rated for fairly well. Elctrodes are like machines, once you've used the best made it's hard to settle for anything less even for home shops. What comes with quality is price. Thats where I have a hard time is buying a good DC machine for no more welding I do now when I have a decent AC machine. The same applys to welding rod, if I had a DC machine and I needed 7018 then I would buy Chemtron. But if I had 50lbs of any 7018 on hand I would burn that first and not waste it.

Hi Tom,

You should be able to buy Chemtron 7018 at any welding supply. You may have to ask them the order a can as some samll CO's may not stock it.

Go to your local steel yard/welding shop and ask for 7018AC. They work good with the AC and will work also on DC. My local steel shop has them and I am sure most do.

7018 will run on AC if the open-circuit voltage is high enough. Look at your welders' spec. plate and you will see that the "lo" tap has less amperage but more O.C. voltage, so if you use 3/32 or 1/8" with most 225 amp ac machines on the low side it will work well. If you install a hi-frequency unit of enough capacity between the welder and the work then you have, virtually, DC and you can use bigger rod on the "hi" side (225 amp.).

Like Tom says, just get the 7018AC. Been using it for years and it works very well.
