I have an older Sanborn air compressor. 10 yrs apprx. Last night when it started running after sanding for 30 min, I could hear the motor really lugging down. I went to check and the motor had almost completely stopped but I could hear it wanting to keep running. I removed pulley belts and motor ran fine. I then tried spinning pulley on compressor and it felt like it had pressure against it, but I could move it. I manually pressed bleed off valve, but this didn't seem to make any difference. Any ideas of what to do? There are no service shops in my town.

Steve:
Sounds like your check valve is no good. The tank pressure is building up in the head and the motor can't handle the pressure of the tank. To see if its the check valve( its usually located in the tank just at the end of the main in feed line to the tank), let all pressure out of tank re-connect everything and if same sympotons appear at around 50-60#'s thats most likely your problem.

Thanks guy's. It was the check valve. Put new one in and runs as good as new again. I have always used the oil from Ingersol Rand for compressor.Is it neccessary or will regular motor oil work. Again thanks for your help:}

Well, I pulled the check valve out, how do I determine if it is bad?

Steve, now that you have the check valve out, disconnect all air lines on the pump. Is the flywheel still hard to turn over? A bad check valve would bleed a full tank down over a couple of days. One way to check. Put check valve back in tank. Do not connect pump outlet line to valve. Pressurize tank with a second compressor. See how long tank holds air. See if there is air escaping from the inlet of the check valve. Philip.

Pressure guage on the tank should tell you smething....take the valve to a big dealer,he should be able to check it....How about the oil int he pump.....I have run 10w - 40 in mine now for about 25 years..... ..I have the tank pressure set at 140#...working pressure at 100#
