but a tractor with a 2 cylinder diesel that
just had the motor rebuilt. The tractor blows
oil out of the muffler. Quite a bit of oil. It
mists all over the tractor and all over me. I was told to break the motor in by running very
hard and the rings would seat and the problem
would go away. Any thougts?

I had a engine (gas) where someone left one of the oil rail rings(three piece oil ring) out and the engine filled the mufler with almost 3/4 of a quart of oil in ten minutes.Eric

Is it engine oil or diesel fuel?
Is the tractor skipping, no power?
Is it smoking really bad?
Sounds like it may be a valve not
seating properly, the injector not
closing properly filling the cylinder
with fuel,or a gaulded piston?

I've NEVER heard of running hard to make the rings seat. Course I've never had a rebuilt diesel either.
Usually you run real easy for the first few hours, not at idle but under light load. Then change the oil. Then the same thing for another few hours. Then change the oil again and you're probably okay.
Could be the rebuilder didn't hone the bores when the new rings were put in, preventing them from seating good?

Try to figure out if it's diesel or lubrication oil. If it's diesel something is wrong with your injectors or pump. If it's sump oil it's the rings or valve stems, etc. etc.

It is hard to guess, but did the mechanic install the oil rings upside down, or leave them out
