Just was on the Miller website, and looks like they discontinued the Shopmaster. I need a 1ph multiprocess power source and wire feeder to run .045 flux core and/or metal core. That makes it a 300 amp machine. Looks like the only choices are inverter machines.....anyone using these? Pretty pricey. Any suggestions?TIA

I've had an inverter multi process unit for about 12 years now. It's great. Input power is single phase 120 or 240 volt. Mig, tig, or Stick. Timing on the gun for spot, stitch (the gas stays on but the welder turns on and off while you just hold the trigger.) or continuous weld. I do a lot of Stainless and the inverters can be set so low as to literally weld foil. Because of the way the input power is converted your DC output is really flat DC, not a 60 cycle pulse like the rectifier units. It's smooth, stable arc and very easy to weld with. A bonus feature is a high frequency start so you don't have to touch your electrode to your work to start the arc. Yes, it was expensive but one stainless steel job paid for it. Buy a domestic manufactured unit though. Mine was made in Finland and I had trouble finding a gun to fit it when I had worn out the original.

Hi BFO,

You didn't name what you needed but multi-process is limited in Millers line. DC/CC/CV is no problem but if AC/HF then it looks like a add on box. The portables have a larger selection and price :)

You can always look at the new DC/CC Mig heads. Don't know how spendy they are tho!

Hi T-Bone, thanks for the response. Yes the choices are limited, without going to an inverter, and that might just be a few jobs away :-( They are expensive! I need DC/CV/CC. Right now I'm leaning towards Lincoln. I bought a Ranger 250 in the fall after renting for years and am very happy with it.

Hey BFO, I've been talking to a guy who just got a MK 2000A inverter power source and he says it it the best thing he has ever used. It's made by the company that makes the Cobramatic feeders, MK products. You can go to MKPROD.COM and see it. It's a 300+ amp machine at 100% duty cycle, and is set up for 120V 1ph Also Lincoln has come out with a new multiprocess power supply called the Invertec V-350. It can be used on either 1 or 3ph. It's 300A/31V/100% cycle---350A/34V/60% cycle for both CC and CV the max and min output is 4-425VDC@ 15-37V. Just quoting factory specs here.... I haven't used either machine, so I can't say how either machine does in the real world, but we have been been looking for a machine like this and are just trying to decide which would be the better choice. When your used to a big machine to do big jobs it's hard to get into the whole inverter thing where you can get so much out of something smaller than a suitcase....Ain't progress great sometimes...??? Hope this helps...Good luck...Wayne

Hey Wayne, you hit the nail on the head! I'm going to look at the Lincoln Invertec. The Power Mig 300 would work fine, but I want to set this wire feeder on a jib, instead of rolling a whole unit around behind me. I'll check out the other machine too, thanks!
