I have a really old bottle-type hydraulic jack that won't lift and am wondering if it's possible for me to fix it. I can't figure out how to get into it. Any ideas?

Thanks

I don't see any need at your stage of repair to remove the ram nut. Most likely the problem is low fluid or valves not working. There should be a filler plug 1/2 way up the side of the tank. See that JACK OIL is up to the hole with the jack in NORMAL position. There are two access plugs for the exhaust & intake valves. Take out the ball and spring from each and make sure they are rust free and clean. Put a cloth in the holes and turn with a phillips screw driver to clean the seats. Remove the pump piston assembly and clean the bore and see that the cup is in good condition with no cracks or excess wear.Replace any oil lost while cleaning.
If everything looks good and the jack still doesn't work, then remove the ram nut and packing. Withdraw the ram and check it's cup for damage & wear. Be sure to use only hydraulic jack oil.

Yeah, it's definitely low on oil. I read somewhere it needs to be filled up to 1/8" shy of the fill hole. It's way below that. I didn't see access plugs at the bottom, but it's covered in gunk. I'll clean it up a bit and check it out. Thanks for the help.

Look at the top of the jack where the rod comes out. If it has a hex on it like a nut then it probably unscrewes right there. You can put the base in a good heavy vise and simply unscrew it. Usually what unscrewes will be just like a big nut that holds the outer shell on so once you get it off you may also have to unscrew the barrel to actually get the rod out. Just make sure if you have to do this that you mark which end is up. Many have the same threads on both ends of the barrel, and if you put it back in upside down the relief hole that keeps you from over extending the ram will be in the wrong place and the jack won't work properly. I've also seen some that had a ring around the top of the ram that is either held in place with some sort of snap ring or a variation thereof, or was threaded in and needed a pin spanner to remove. Either way, on these, you remove the ring and the ram slides out the top where you can renew the seal that way. Many newer ones, even a few of the older ones are sealed and aren't repairable at all. It's almost to the point you can buy a brand new one of a higher tonnage than the one your repairing for less than the cost of the repair parts.
Hope this helps.... Wayne

There isn't a hex nut at the top--it's round and smooth. I'll have to look closer to see if it has a snap ring or something similar. Thanks for the info.

As long as the oil is at the edge of the fill hole, you're ok. Be sure to clean the jack thoroughly before opening it up. The "nut" at the top may take a special wrench. It has two recesses at opposite sides. You can make a long handled wrench to fit the recesses. I'll leave the design to you.
