I am rebuilding a 1987 honda 4-wheeler and i am having a really tough time removing the old gaskets. I cant use anything that is very sharp or I risk gouging the soft aluminum of the engine. Any other suggestions?

They make a spray on gasket remover that works really well, available at any auto parts store.

If you don't have any spray gasget remover in a can you can use paint remover(the old stinky stuff, use with care) The guy with the scotch-brite pads also has a good idea if you use them with caution.

Yup, I use stuff on all snowmobile gaskets. Same deal, I don't want to scar the aluminum. Let the goop sit for awhile and it'll soften the gasket. Then I use a razorblade in a holder to carefully scrape the remaining sludge away. You don't have to scrape hard once the goops had a chance at it.

Worked on a bunch of motorsickels when I was younger, and I'm familiar with the problem. I find that a dull wood chisel, with an edge about like a butter knife works pretty well to get the big chunks off without gouging the aluminum, and then a Scotch-brite pad.

They make an arbor for a die grinder that uses little round scotch-brite pads. Mechanic buddy of mine loves 'em, works slicker than a smelt on aluminum heads and such.

As a mechanic myself,I have to agree, the scotch-brite pads on a die grinder is definately the way to go. I wouldn't leave home without one on my service truck... The ones I use are called rol-locs...I forget who the mfg is..... Just be careful if you go this route and get the right discs for what your doing. It might be "only" scotch-brite, but if you get one of the grades that's too course you can easily cut the casting if your not really careful. I know places like Northern Tool, and Grainger have them in one form or another. Good luck, Wayne
