I hope one of you guys out there can help me !!!
My van, which also has had head gasket problems, is acting up badly.
It is has a rough idle and the smell of fuel when it's running. The is a smoke out of the tail pipe but it's a gas smell, not oil. I replaced the fuel injector #5 (that's what the "computer" said to do) but there was no luck there at all. My "Check Engine" light came back on. I am desperate this is my only transportation I have. I fell "okay" driving 2 blocks to take my kids to school but then after that I am terrified of a spark causing an explosion since the fumes are SO STRONG !!!
Any help or suggestions out there?

If you have a cylinder that is not firing properly, you'll smell raw gas in the exhaust, experience a rough idle, and set the check engine light. Could be something as simple as a loose spark plug wire or a bad plug. Better get a reputable mechanic involved.

Been there. A 1987 Ford Ranger did the same thing. It was the fuel pressure regulator. Pull the vacuum line to it. Fuel will come out of it. After replacing the regulator be sure to change the oil. Mine had almost 3 gallons of gas in the oil and that was after driving less than a mile.

I had the same problem as Frank with my '86 Ranger 2.9 V-6. I first thought it was the injector for #6 cylinder because that was the one getting all the gas. However, the reason #6 got all the gas is because it is directly below the fuel regulator.

Painful, but time to get a Pro involved or park it until repaired.Fuel vapors(smell)in passenger compartment or indeed anywhere around a modern vehicle are a MAJOR problem indicator. And in a minivan type situation I'd be very concerned.Raw fuel IS escaping the system somewhere and potential for disaster is high.

There could be external fuel system leaks, leaks from the other injectors or a leaking fuel pressure regulator. Check for the presence of fuel at the vacuum connection of the fuel pressure regulator. If so, it would indicate fuel getting directly into the intake manifold through the vacuum hose.

Good advice from Alan. Also check for gasoline in oil, it can leak down and wear out your motor.
