92 model, no turbo, 7.3 diesel, 238,000 miles. Noticed a slight miss the other day but it settled down and went back to running right. Didn't think much about. I was on the road yesterday and had about 300 miles behind me when it just quit going down the highway like you'd turned the key off. Had fuel at the filter. Cracked open the right front injector, spun her over and she fired right up. So, obviously I picked up some air but from where? Ran fine the rest of the way, bout 20 miles. If I'm getting air in why ain't there no fuel coming out anywhere. Any ideas? Diaphram in the lift pump maybe? Thanx

dg, There is a very good website that deals with Ford trucks with diesels called The Diesel Stop. They have a forum similar to this one that is broken down by year of truck. They have now over 30,000 registered users and I always get good info there. Good luck, Kent

I hope it's just a air suction leak but that's also the same symptoms that it will have when the injector pump is going out. These around here usually have symptoms like yours has done for 1000-1500 miles then the pump just refuses to go again.

It'll start doing that and when you bleed it, the thing will sit there and idle all day but when you try to take off it dies til you prime it again.

I know you know your buisness burr, sure hope your wrong this time. I put a new fuel pump on it and ran a quart of atf through it. Seems to be running fine, maybe a little peppier. If it's all right I might get back with ya if I keep having problems. I'm gonna chance about 300 miles tuesday, I'll let you know what happens.

Thanks men, you've giving me a few things to check out. I've checked from the filter back to the tank and everthing "looks" ok except for down around the fuel pump. The flexible supply line to the pump looks a little soft and has some signs of fuel damage. Think I'll start there and replace the line and pump and see what happens. I don't like the idea of being just a parts changer but I really don't know what else to do at this point. thanks again

Got a 6.2 with an opitonal fuel filter - Racor. It has a clear plastic bowl. I had done a replacement of the fuel pump and the injector pump, and was watching it idle. Slowly the bowl began to fill up with air, when it got too low, of course the engine stalled. I worked on that problem for days. Replaced, repaired or tested everything from the fuel filter (including the filter assembly) back to the sock inside the tank! To this day, I don't know where that leak was! Good luck! (Have you tried running it with the fuel tank cap off?) A plugged vent in the fuel cover might cause your problem.

Hi dg,

A leak on the suction side of the pump. Do you have the drain valve on the filter like the new ones where you could add a clear fuel line and open the drain into a 5gal bucket to check for air?

If it's sucking air you should beable to squart oil on the leak and see the oil disappear into the leak when you find it.
