I was at a garage sale and got into a discussion about a 4 prong 120/240v receptical on a generator. I said I thought 120/240 was used for ranges, washers & dryers where there were 120v lamps and timers. Someone said it's a neutral wire used to balance the 240 to prevent overheating and fire. I replied that 240 does not have a neutral wire, only an equipment ground.
Someone else jumped in, and I walked to another item. I also have a gen with a 4 prong 120/240 receptical and would like to use it for a 240v pressure washer with 3 wire cord. I have one 4 prong plug ($20 each.) I was also thinking of making an extention box using common 3 wire recepticals to avoid more $20 purchases. Just use the 4 prong I have to plug the box into the gen. Any advice welcome.

Your subject line says it all. (120/240). The 4
wires are Ground, Neutral and 2 Hot. Arranged
like below.

....G H.....H ....N

The Ground is chassis. The 2 hots are 240 volt.
The neutral splits the 240, 120 each way to neutral.
If your application is simply 240 volt you can use
the 4 wire plug by using only the Ground and the 2 Hots. The neutral is not needed.

May not pass code, but will work fine safely.
