I've got an 029 that starts, idles and revs fine, but as soon as you try and cut, it stalls. It's been getting progressively worse over the past day. This appears to be a fuel problem more than an electrical problem wouldn't you say? Any suggestions on where I should start looking?

Many thanks for any suggestions. Although I've never used the tool talk board, I have used the tractor pages, and have found them most useful. Thanks to all who have helped make this such a great resource.

You have messed with the 2 adj screw, first ,mistake. Turn both in until they seat, then back out 1.5 turns. dump out ALL of your gas in can and fueltank and start fresh with a non-alchohal fuel. start, if it idles good, do not mess with idle screw, if not adjust that. Then, open the high speed jet up if it still dieing under load. If this does not solve it, it probably needs a carb rebuild with new gasket and diaphrams.

I'll bet it is a clogged Spark Arrestor screen in the muffler. Make sure you "remove the screen" and look it it.

Yes the exhaust does not have to be clogged, just restricted some. Clean it all out. I had this problem on a weed eater.

Check the fuel filter in the gas tank.

Bill H is probably correct. Check the fuel line for a leak.

How do you check it for a leak when I've never noticed a leak? Maybe for $6.79 I'll try and replace the line. How do you get it off though? Seems like you've got to pull the carb.

$6.79? I buy my fuel line and tank filters at the local hobby shop. I get model aircraft fuel line for 65¢/foot and I think I paid about $2.50 for the filter. Seems to last as long as the saw shop stuff before it gets hard and brittle.

I was told that model fuel is a lot more potent than gas. Any model aircraft people on the site that can verify that?

I could see a film of gas on the top of the gas tank when my started leaking. I could keep the saw running sometimes by fluttering the throttle like you described in another message.

To changed the gas line you need to fish the filter out of the tank and take it off the end of the fuel line. I don't think you need to tak e the carburator off. You should probably take off the air filter and you will need to take off the throttle assembly under the carburator. With the throttle assembly off you should have enough room to get the hose off the carb. After that there is a rubber cork/bushing built right into the gas line that needs to be popped out of the gas tank.

Since you will have to go to the Stihl dealer to get the gas line anyway, you may want to have them change it. It shouldn't take long to fix.

My Stihl is a 039 so it may be different than yours.

Bill H, you were correct. I replaced the line, (I saw some very small cracks in the old one), and it now runs like a champ.

Thanks to all who helped me solve this problem

I had a similar problem with my Stilhl. It ended up being a small break in the rubber hose that goes from the gas tank to the carb. The saw would run at idle and under load until it sucked air into the gas line. A new gas line cost me about $7.00. Good Luck.

I do not know if this applies, but on my brother's saw, a wire for the shut off wore through and would ground out intermittantly with the vibration of full power. Seemed like it was not getting enough gas.

I changed to some fresh gas. No change. I put in a new plug ( old one was fine) - no change.
I adjusted the mixture screws to several different settings on both screws - No significant change, mostly engine ran/accelerated worse. The muffler is clear. The engine freely revs wide open with no misses. No wires are worn. It has a 20" bar.

The problem started as an occasional bog under load, and quickly got progressively worse.

usually only when put to cutting does it falter after a couple of seconds. Feathering the gas can keep it running until the next time. I noticed this time I can make it bog not under load by playing with the throttle trigger.

Thanks for all of your suggestions. I think I'm taking it to a pro. Could this be an ignition module failure?

Clean the air filter they become dirty and won,t let it have air. My saw got so it wouldn,t pull under load cleaned the filter with air hose works like a champ. Remove from saw before you clean it. Hope this solves your problem. Lots cheaper than taking it to shop. Let me know if this works. Thanks.

did ya mess with the carb? is the chain dull? i too wood check the exhaust area, the screen & the exhaustports, while ya got the muffler off look in the ports & inspect the piston walls & cly. walls,,when ya hold the throddle wide open does it screem or have a slight miss? if its screemin ya got the high screw in too far!!!!! we assume you have a 16" bar not a 24" i hope this helps

Put a new spark plug in it before you mess with the carb. If it still runs the same open the high speed jet 1/4 turn. If it still is not right take it to the dealer. I will fix anything on the farm, but the Stihl dealer does the carb tune up on my saws.

IS fuel Mix OK? I have a stihl and found that it does same thing sometime, I re-adjusted HS mix. screw a little. More gas, runs richer. it didnt idle well so I increased the idle screw up a little. Dont idle like I would like it to, but it cuts the weeds. BTW, have you ever checked the little muffler screen, if they are plugged, it will take away from the H.P. Hope this hep's.
