I bought a Homelite straight shaft string trimmer.
The ?gear box? just above the trimmer head seems to get really hot. Is there a way to lubricate this part? Should I use oil or grease? Thanks

If it is new take it back. I had a Ryobi that did that. I went through 2 heads before I sold it. My new Styhl doesn't get hot.

Mike, is it new? is it used?
i have a "weedeater" brand trimmer. it gets hot there too, but not hot enough to burn up. there is no way to lube the assembly on mine.

it is a gear box, so some heat is normal.

I assume you have the black 'curved' gear head. It is the lowest price head HOMELITE uses and is not considered 'serviceable'...BUT since the more expensive aluminun gearhead has instructions to use a good lithiun grease every 100 hours, I would VERY carefully take the head apart and regrease it at least every 50 hours.
