I'm getting tired of using "spray bombs". It's time to buy a gun. I have SOME experience with them, but it's been years ago. I think I can get to be "good enough" to use one, with some practice. The gun I used long ago, was a Binks #7. It was the most popular one with body and paint shops back then. I want to get a decent one. I will be painting a tractor or two, but mostly impliments that I "recondition" prior to selling. What is the deal with the "gravity feed" guns? Are they OK for the type of work I'm going to do? Or are they for "house painting" as I've been told? What are some good guns? What do you use? How much should I look to spend, to get a good quality gun? I have an air compressor that will handle the task. I have already installed a water trap. All I THINK I need is the gun. Are the Campbell/Hausfeld guns any good? They look cheap. Or should I go with a Binks, or something comparable? Some idea's please, Thanks John

The Binks HVLP guns are good, we use them at work. It's the cleanup I don't like. In June I purchased a Sharpe Cobalt HVLP gravity fed gun. It sprays good and the best feature for me is it is a breeze to clean compared to the conventional siphon cup guns. It is also easy to check how much paint is remaining in the cup. So, all other things being equal I like the easier cleanup that the gravity fed guns afford.

Haven't heard the house painting thing. It's probably more a matter of personal preference. I have used both, the old style more like 20 years ago. That one was a Campbell Hausfield and was a piece of junk. Perhaps the newer ones are better, I don't know. The gravity feed guns do not sputter, and allow you to use all the paint in the gun, so they are superior, in my opinion. For painting implements, you probably don't need a high dollar gun. If you are going to paint tractors and want a near perfect finish, buy a refurbished $175 Sharpe Platinum (www.sharpe1.com), which is $350 new, and you will never look back -- never have to buy another gun, either, if you take care of it. Other good guns available, too. Put your water trap as for away from the compressor as you can get it, mine is 70 feet.

The campbell-Hausfeld will work just fine for what you are wanting to do.
The gravity feed HVLP guns are not necessarily any better, but will comply with OSHA and EPA rules in a commercial setting.

binks #7 and DeVilbiss MBC are (IMHO) the very best on the market, but very expensive. they will last a lifetime with proper care as i still have both of mine after 35 years of use they preform flawlessly. some of the less known brands MIGHT be ok, but i don't have any experience with them.
