I need some help locating a belt for my 13'' lathe. The origional belt was leather, about 1 3/4" wide by 60 1/2 " length.

I once was at grandpa Wise's house with uncle Bob in an old 32 Ford when I was small...when we were ready to go the fanbelt broke on startup...they tied hay baling twine around it and we drove it all the way to town that way. The belt worked so well on that 'ol Ford that uncle Bob asked the girl that suggested it if she wanted to take a chance on an indian blanket the next time he saw her. I didn't know he was in the selling business, I always thought that he was a farmer...but I was young. Maybe you could use twine? Fred OH

Website for South Bend is www.southbendlathe.com They can ID your lathe by serial number, tell you the age and parts availability. Mine turned out to be a 1913, 134 inch, by 72 bed, parts no longer available. Flat leather belt is probably available at a harness or shoe repair shop.

Go to a bearing supply or power transmission supply and get a "rubber" gear belt and turn it inside out, so the smooth side is in and it will run quiet, slip MUCH less, and you will be happy. It won't be anymore expensive than leather. Just keep oil off of it. McMaster has leather and various plastic belting if you want to go that route. The only drawback I can see to the gear belt is that you must take the spindle out of the lathe to get it on, but if done carefully and CLEANLY this isn't a problem.

You could try Mcmaster-Carr at www.mcmaster.com and check in with the SB group on Yahoo, they are a good source for SB info.
