I'm considering a stihl 045 chainsaw that has had one previous owner and is in great condition. Can anyone give me an opinion on this model? I want to know what you think of this model if you have ever owned or used one. Thanks for your help.

I have had one for a while now. I have no compaints about it. I worked for a landscaping business for a while and had one there too. That thing took a beating with so many different people using it all the time, but it hung in there.

Hey Robert, better be getting a real good deal. Stihl are notorious for not wanting to run on their side in the rain, like falling trees. Think Husqvarna, light years ahead of Stihl. CEP

Where do you come up with this stuff? 045 was THE logging saw, it ran in any position you put it in. If the low side is adjusted incorrectly, ANY saw will stall on it's side.

Stihltech, I do agree with you on that one, " the 045 was THE logging saw in its day. For its size class very few others could compete. Ran one for 4 years and it never missed a beat. Have a 038 Super now that i've had since 1983 and a new MS 440 I got last year. Very satisfied with them all, had Homelites, Remingtons, McCullochs, all junk compared to a Stihl, Huskies are good saws, however comma, STIHL is how you spell chainsaw!

Let's see, I live in the Seattle area, they do a little logging in Seattle you know. I worked in the pile driving trade (trees drove in the ground), for 25-years, for 6 of those years I purchased all the tools for my job sites. For 4-years I lived next door to a master mechanic for a huge logging firm. Who complained all the time about the down time with the Stihl saws. Then again, I thought this was America, and I was still entitled to my opinion, Thanks pal. CEP

your opinion isnt right tho. I logged with those saws thru wind & rain & snow for 20 years. They dont act like that here.

Hi bob, glad to here you have had such good luck with them. When you get some free time, try running one about 2 to 4-inch above salt water as the tide is coming in and you just got to get a pile cut to grade before the tide swamps you. Then get back to me, LOL. CEP

So, CEP, are you telling us that Stihl's are no good solely based on the fact that they stall when turned on the side & run 4" above salt water with moisture being sucked into the carb?

If you are going to bad-mouth Stihl, you need a credible example rather than the bizarre situation you just described!

Mike, all I'm saying is Stihl's don't work for me, and Husqvarna do. In your line of work if a certain name brade tool seems to never do what you ask of it, but another brand does, which one are you going to buy? Gees, I never ment to open a hornet's nest! Enough SAID!

In 77 I bought a Stihl 'Farm Boss' , I think it's the 045 , it's still a &%$# good saw , but I was talking do the dealer today , who has been a friend of mine for over 30 years , and he said some replacement parts are obsolete , you might want to consider this .....

Yep the 041 is the Farmboss had mine fired up yesterday clearing some fence line. I think some parts are becoming obsolete, but I was at one dealer in town and asked about an air filter for mine and he said he thought they were NLA, I went to my usual guy who just got out of selling Stihl and he had mine ordered in a few minutes. Check Ebay for used 041 parts they show up often.

Nope, the old farm boss was same as 041AV. It was one size smaller than 045. There is a new farm boss now, the 029. The 045 was replaced by 056, one of the mightiest timber cutting saws ever made.

I think they made several size of farm boss's. I am almost sure I have seen an 039 and 044 or 045 that were farm boss's. I have an 029 and it is the best saw I have ever used, sure is one cutting machine.

very nice saw in 1976/77 i can't imagine anyone storing this saw for 30years but there is still alot of o31's around still cutting firewood,if your paying big bucks you might want to cut wood with it first, tooth brush the air filter mesh, check the sparkplug, fresh mixed gas ok 25 yrs

Up until last year I cut all my firewood with an 07 Stihl made about 1970, I Have an 026 and an 045, piston and cylinder is about the major obsolete items for that model, my dad had the 045 until he past away, that's a good saw and just like grabbing a hornets nest when you pull the throttle back. 3 Stilhs all running and ready to do it. I have a Husky 365 with a 24 inch bar, nice saw with plenty power but prefer my Stihls.

Well, heres the interesting thing, it hasnt been just sitting there for 30 years or so, It has been used periodically for light firewood cutting and that sort of thing, I'm told it does run like a champ right now. but thanks for the advice on the other things that you recommended be done.

I had an 045 come to my shop after another dealer had to put points in it every year. Replaced the grommet around the wires going under the flywheel and never had to put points in it again. Did not have much down time on them around here, one heck of a saw.
