I have a 1/2" drive flex head New Britain #54 ratchet wrench and the guts are worn out. I got it in Hilo, Hawaii in 1965 and it is stamped "made in U.S.A.". Are they still in business or am I gonna hafta coff up $100+ for a new 'un? Any answers? Thanks in advance..... .Dell (WA)

Dell --

Just like the old jokes, there's good news and there's bad news.

The bad news is that New Britain Hand Tool closed their doors in 1984 or thereabouts; some of their brand names, designs, and equipment were sold to National Hand Tool (now a division of Stanley) . . . but not the New Britain brand.

The good news is that New Britain mechanic's tools were sold through National Auto Parts Association (NAPA), and NAPA will generally replace New Britain tools with NAPA-branded equivalents . . . which still carry a lifetime warranty.

For what it's worth, the New Britain brand names sold to National Hand Tool included Blackhawk and Husky. Stanley still uses the Blackhawk brand themselves, selling the tools through "professional auto supply" channels. Stanley also produces the Husky-branded tools that are sold through Home Depot. So, Stanley will back-up Blackhawk with Blackhawk, while Home Depot will replace old Husky with new Husky.
