Stanley Bostitch 1.5hp compressor CWC156, has brass relief valve in head, 1/2 of air leaks through it all the time, Can it be removed to clean, maybey just got some dirt in it? I assume it should hold pressure until exceeding the rated psi of compressor?

I apologize I am New to compressors, $5 at yard sale

John

Is this a safety valve or an unloader valve? Some of these small compressors have an intentional built in "leak" that allows them to blow down without the use of a real unloader valve. It consists of a simple brass plug in a brass housing that leaks air until there is sufficient volume coming from the compressor to shut it. Once the compressor comes up to pressure and shuts off, leakage of air back from the check valve through the reeds in the compressor head causes a sufficient pressure drop in the discharge line that this valve then flops open and releases all of the remaining air in the line, unloading the compressor. If this has failed, then it probably will not close properly, and you will lose most of your discharge air. If you can clean, fix, or replace it, you have a very nice compressor to work with for just $5.

Keep in mind the purpose of the SAFETY release valve!!! You most likely have some trash in the ball to seat area. Try cleaning/flushing it with WD40. Remove it and pull the ring out that releases the ball from the seat while flusing thru the end that goes into the head or tank. After flushing release the ring/stem and let the check ball seat then try turning the ring/stem assembly which useally exerts enough pressure on the ball to wipe the ball seat. Flush it again and the put it back in the unit and check for leaking. Tractor Supply has the valve for $10.00 if all else fails. If the valve cures the problem you are still money ahead.

Most relief valves like this are a springloaded ball seating onto a brass seat. If this is the case, often you can take it apart, clean it good and place the ball back in the seat and tap it with a hammer on a brass or some kind of soft rod to make it seat in the housing. WARNINg---- the safety valve is in the compressor for you own protection from overpressurizing the tank!!!

You are correct, it should pop off only above the normal shutoff pressure of the compressor. grainger sells replacements. Be aware it might double or triple your total investment in the compressor though ;>)

Unscrew it and check it out, you've nothing to lose.

I agree, if it isn't working now what's to lose. The compressor does build up some gunk in the valves and the relief valve will get some if it ever operates. The gunk will hold the relief valve slightly open if it gets between the actual valve and seat.
