HELP! I am looking at buying my husband a 1986 John Deere 318 lawn tractor. It has metered 142 hours, dump cart, rear bagging system, power chute, two 40# weights, 38" mow deck. It was used mainly in Arizona. Asking price is $3500.00. I have no clue if this is a good tractor or if there are any problems with this series. When I called some lawn equipment dealers they had mixed opions. Some suggested I would be better off buying new. We have about 1.5 acres to mow. My husband now has a Murray tractor that is about two years old that was included with the purchase of our home. It takes a long time to mow and it leaves the yard spotty. We have some woods at the edge of our property that he is thinking about clearing some of for a compost. He has been considering buying a dump cart for the Murray for hauling fire wood and such. I would like to surprise him for Christmas 1998. Am I looking at good deal or should I stick with what I got?! Anyone that can help I would really like to hear from you. Thanks!

generally 318's have 50" to 48" cut but i assume that the 38" deck has to go with the bagging system. 142 hours is very low hours on a 318. check the validity of the # of hours.a 48" deck would make a small job out of 1.5 acres.Deere does not make a 50" deck anymore.suggestion:double check hours, keep dump cart, trade bagging system in at your local dealer on a 48" deck,$3500 is pretty reasonable for a 318 with all the optional equipment.
