I need to replace a front U-joint on my wrangler, but the center nut holding the bearing and axle assembly is siezed up, the threads on the bolt are really messed up, too. We've tried heating it up and cooling it down quickly to break the rust, hitting it, penetrating oil, and just brute force on a long breaker bar. We even tried putting a floor jack under the breaker bar to force it up, that just bent the ratchet we had stuck through the U-joint to keep the axle from turning. Any other ideas would be most appreciated, we're ready to just bring it to a mechanic and pay someone else to deal with it.

I knew a fellow who had a stuck nut. He had to go to the doctor to get it fixed.

I would try to heat it CHERRY RED and don't cool it back down. After its CHERRY RED try your impact or long breaker bar on the S.O.B.

i kinda agree with Rodger.you don't say what year of jeep.but if its an AMC manuf.jeep.there is a good chance it is left handed thread.if i remember right 1 side is LHT and the other RHT..darn crs

it's an 87, so it is an AMC. maybe it is left hand.

I have factory Jeep manuals for '84 thru '90 and looked at them and cannot find any reference to LH thread. It merely says to pull the cotter pin and remove the nut. As others have noted, the reinstallation torque is 175 ft/lbs.

no, i ran my finger along the threads and i'm positive they're normal. the sob's been soaked with aero kroil for about 16 hours now, and it still hasn't moved

I've changed them on 86 and 90 Comanche's and the Dana axle should be the same. This is of no help, but I've done it with 1/2' drives (but then I'm 275# lol)Keep in mind Chilton's manual calls for 175# torque on that nut, so yes that's tight and I had to buy a good socket to fit. Don't remember that it was LH. Bill

I refuse to sell my soul and time to a stuck nut, I use a cut off wheel on a die grinder, cut off the offending nut, dress up the threads and put a new nut on. It save ulsers and often money.

A 3/4" or 1" drive impact wrench will likely get it off slicker'n snot. Any buddies st up with such equipment?
