I would like to bend and form sheet metal. Should I make or buy a brake. I dont have any plans, but thought this would be a good place to start for any advice.

Hi Goofy,

Did you here that micky mouse had to put minnie mouse into a mental hospital. She was F$%@ing goofy!

You can buy a 4ft TenSmith 22ga box & pan brake for about $600 new. You can either bend a 4ft straight section or make a box. If you adjust the brake, then you can bend short thicker pieces if needed.

To bend a piece of 4ft metal 90º at the center and both ends takes alot of stiffness in the leaf of the brake with adjustments. Thats something that a cheap Northern Tool brake can't do.

Although the Tensmith won't hold up to constant commerical use, it's made well enough for years of home shop work.

You can also get new a 10ft 20ga hand brake for about $1500.

I say that and haven't checked since the price of steel took off so it may be higher.

It all just depends on what you want the brake to accomplish of what you need to buy.

Try northern tool or an inexpensive place like that. I got a small cheap one from Homier for around $30-40. I need to take the top piece to a mach. shop to cut into smaller sections so I can make tabs etc., it;s not a heavy duty rig but it's good for small jobs.

Goofy, I have been trying to buy a metal brake for years. They sell cheap at auctions, until I bid, then the price goes through the roof. You need a shear also. Goodluck. alvinnms
