i recent took this mower apart due to bad engine condition. it would idle up and down irraticaly. I clean the spark plug, drained the gas tank, cleaned the air filter, cleaned the carburator, and changed the oil.I would have ajusted the carburator , but it was a throttle-free design. it is set up like a normal briggs and straton motor. i accidentally overfilled the thing with oil. I mean three quarters of the way up the dip stick. So it was really full of oil. I didn"t realize it until i had cranked it. I drained the oil down to where it was supposed to be amd it is still running very badly. It will crank but it misses even worse and the blade moves very slowly. any suggestion or tips is greatly appreciated. thanks, Justin.

Try a new flywheel key. Get one specifically for your engine. One from the general hardware store must not be used.

Sounds to me like the linkage to the governor post might be messed up.

A couple of things come to mind...

Check to see if your flywheel key is partially bent or sheered. If it is warped and not sheered completely, it might let it run, but be rough.

Also you might check your level of spark from your coil/armature. Take the spark plug out, and either hold it or the spark plug wire (with a pair of insulated pliers or a screwdriver) hold it next to a ground (engine head bolts). Pull the cord. If the spark is blue, your spark is good, if the spark is not seen or is yellowish, it is weak.

Check these and post your findings. If you have good fire (spark at the right time) then it has to be in the fuel system.

I cleaned the flywheel and the armiture and I don't know what to set the armiture at. Ireset it a coulpe of times by eyeballing it. Even when the spark plug's spark is blue it still misses. It idles up and down at a constant speed. Justin.

Hey dudes, so what is the gap suposed to be set at,between the armature and the flywheel? My motor is a 10 horse, verticle shaft. Can any of you folks tell me what the air gap is? Is this air gap the same on most of this type mower motors?, 10, 11, 12 horse...ect.? Thanks for any help Rick

1234,

Okay, if you have a blue spark and it runs, you probably need to focus on the fuel side of things.

As mentioned above, if the engine runs but is surging, you should check the govenor linkage (spring stretched or broke?). You might also check your gaskets on the carb. to see if one might be ripped or have a hole covered up.

By the way, I might have missed it, but what brand of engine is it? I am thinking its a Briggs&Stratton if its on a murray.

what model engine is this, if it one of them cheap briggs with a carb on top of the tank with a primer on the side replace the carb diaphram/gasket. we repalce over 150 of the little gasket/diaphram kits a year. If it is surging, then the carb is running lean and needs more fuel.
