hello
What is the best way to stop condensation (water) from forming on the ceiling inside an enclosed metal building? It does it at night. Is ventilation needed at the peak? The floor is dirt, is it coming from the ground cooling off? Would a cement floor stop it? Or does ceiling need insulation instead of ventilation? Thanks for suggestions.

Thanks everyone. First Going to try one of those $40 power ventalation fans if i can find a way to adapt it to the roof panels ridges. Hopefully the easiest solution. Plus it will keep it cooler in summer. If that doesn't work then will have to find a way to glue some insulation between the 2 1/4 roof beams 5' on center. Concrete's coming later..... .....

They are right on the temp difference causeing the condensation. When we built our last barn, our carpenter suggested a product called thermo-ply. Its a thin foil covered paper product less than 1/8 in thick, that comes in 4x8 sheets. It sure worked good. I don;t know if its available everywhere or not. we nailed it on the purlings before putting the roof steel on. no Sweating.

Ventilation in an existing building is most cost efficient fix. After listening to great advice three years ago, I put half-inch Celotex insulation on the outside of my pole barn before putting on the metal. Took more time and $$ (about $450) but was worth every nickel. No drafts inside when the wind blows, no condensation.

Its the differential in temperature that causes the problem.Insulation is a sure way to address the problem.Another way is to keep the temperature very near the same on both sides of the roof. This can be done with adequate ventilation, sometimes necessitating the use of fans to move the warmer inside air to the outside.

This is like condensation on your glass of ice tea. The celing is getting colder than the air inside the room. Even a thin layer of insulation will keep the air from contacting the metal roof and prevent this from happening. Ventelation helps, stopping sources of moisture will help. A cement floor will stop ground moisture from coming in if you put down a layer of polyethelene first. This will not totaly solve your problem but will help. Stopping the air from contacting the metal celing is you best bet.

LD, I have a "tractor shed" built some time ago with the problem you have. When it's cool out condensation forms and then drips to the inside especially if the sun hits the roof and warms it up quick. The building is open on one long side and, I believe gets plenty of air movement. When we built our shop, we added a layer of house wrap directly over the purlins and under the sheet metal. This building is heated and not ventilated and I do not have any condensation problems in it. I hope this can help you in some way.

Dieselrider...How do you keep the house wrap from saging between the purlins? Aren't they about 5' apart x 20' long? I've only heard of Tyvek and I think it's pricey stuff. What are you using?
Thanks,
Slowpoke

Slowpoke, my 2" x 4" purlins are only 2 feet apart and the wooden trusses are four feet apart so saging isn't a problem. We just rolled it up or down over the purlins right before installing the sheet metal.

I was thinking of an all steel building with 20' bays.

Ventilation. I have a continuous ridge vent and two windows that always stay open, end of problem.
