I'm shopping around for a used single phase tig welder. I was told,(by a miller salesman) that miller sycrowave 250 and dynasty 200's are great machines with square wave AC. I don't know much about other brands but would like to learn. Any input would be great, thanks.

Hi Andy,

I"ve only used one invertor based supply and that was 14yrs ago. Nice machine for what it was design for.

Have you considered scratch start Tig? 90% of home/industrial shop work can be used with this type of equipment very easy. Do a search for Tig on this website.

What I do for the more expensive machines is to take a Voc-Tech welding course for nothing more than getting to try out all the new welding machines. They usually keep the latest machines avavilable.

Just let the instructor know ahead of time what you wanting to do. He"ll see that you"ve set-up the machine correctly then leave you alone.

Besure and take a preclass inspection to the school before you pay your money. Some have ratty equipment.

I would truley love to try out a square wave machine. Back in the 60"s and 70"s we were fighting stray square wave welding currents on Tig. Now they use square wave on purpose! LMAO

I've been doing alot of research into TIG units myself. I'm convinced the Miller units are probably the best quality around for the money, Lincoln and Hobart (same company) are second fiddle to Miller. I'm sure there are others that are good professional units but for the money the Millers probably cannot be beat.

If you are not doing real heavy work, they make a real nice 180 amp unit.

Charles: Just a quick clarification--Miller bought Hobart, and incorporated many of their features into the Hobart welders. For example, my Hobart MIG has a Miller gun on it. Lincoln is a separate company from these two.

Hey Andy, take a look on Ebay and do a search for a Miller Aircrafter, there was one of them on there, that when I saw it the other night, was going for about $2000. The only thing about it is it"s on in CA and the guy doesn"t want to ship it. Our local "go to guy" for the odd stuff that we aren"t setup to do, is an older fellow that can and has welded just about anything that can be welded. He said he has used all the new machines with all the controls, etc that "do the welding for you" and they are nice. When it"s all said and done though he has one of the first Aircrafter"s put out that he uses constantly and according to him it is one of the best power supplies Miller ever made. Not to mention one of the last ones made with all copper windings. I believe he told me the machine as it sets is over 1000lbs. Good luck finding you a good one..
