I have a five acre site in St. Paul Minnesota that my wifes family owned for 80 years. They operated greenhouses. We are developing the land.
The only thing I have left standing is a 36 by 136 Pole barn. It is totally insulated with a 12 or 14 foot tall ceiling. the entire ceiling is covered with white steel panels. I almost destroyed the building but then thought Maybe someone would take it down for free or maybe even buy it. It was built about 1980. Does anyone have an opinion on if it has any value?

Thanks

YOu might want to think about getting a prety hefty deposit to ensure that EVERYTHING is removed, I have seen many instances where people strip out what they want and then leave the rest for you to clean up.

Try posting it on this website. You can only give stuff away, might be worth a shot. I've gotten rid of some bigger stuff and have a couple of friends who used it also. Link

Put it on wisfarmer.com. And don"t give it away. Free attracts the tire kickers who never do anything. Ask the metal value to you at least.

Is there any steam or gas clubs in the area? They might take it down and reuse it at their site. You can even get a tax deduction for donation to a non-profit org.

It's hard to find anyone that actually wants to put forth the effort to acquire something for free. I had a nice pole-barn type machine shed located on US Highway 12 that had to be removed for a pending highway project. Over the past 6 months I've offered it to 3 different individuals for the taking and moving. So far, nobody has done anything...so by the end of the month, it will be scrap metal and kindling!

I have a neighbor that has dismantled and rebuilt a number of them. I also have a son that would be interested in something like that, especially much smaller. We are 1 1/2 hours west of you, and my neighbor and son are laid off each winter from construction. If interested, drop me an email. I hired a mover a few years ago to move a 40x75 building (intact) from one of our farms to another. That is also an option in your area, especially if on the outskirts of the city, but my neighbor numbers and dismantles everything on site.

JMS/MN,
Your email is still covered and mine seems to be also, even though I checked Not to hide it.
If this does not work let me know and I will add my Email to another post.

I don't understand this business about covering and uncovering emails- so is there some other way we can get in touch? Did it some months ago with a USDA office in the senders area- maybe we can develop a common link?

You are not allowing your email to be 'visable' here, even if you enter it. There is a little box to check to allow the rest of us to see your email - you need to check this. (Now with being registered around here, perhaps you need to go to a configuration menu to change that setting - it could be saved with your cookie?)

Otherwise, just type it in the body of your text.

I would highly recomend getting a Hotmail, Yahoo, or so forth free email address & using that for public exposure - you won't believe the amount of spam you get, & these places offer a free email address and generally offer good spam & anti-virus filters.

Guys, you can put your email address in the body of your email without fear. Spell out the @ like this: fowlerrathotmail.com, and the robots used to glean address' cannot recognize it as a email address. I like hotmail because it has its own virus protection before you ever see the incoming email, and warns you of potentially harmfull contents. Then it gives you the option of downloading it so you may rescan it with your own virus protection if you wish. It is not my primary address, so if spammers begin to give me trouble I'm free to change the address quickly.

Advertise it at 30% of the material cost and see what you get. Make sure that you get whoever signs on to give you a waiver and releases you from any and all liability. It"s also possible that you could donate it to Habitat for Humanity. They may be interested in some of the materials. Other charitable organizations may also be able to help you out.

Run lights to it, and buy some tractors and old cars and go to work. Thats big enough for a wood shop in the corner.

have you thought of renting it out as storage for rv's ,boats etc.? seems a shame to destroy a perfectly good building like that. just my 2 cents.
Have a good one

How tight is the time?

Offer it for sale. Do not give it away - you will attract the wrong people with a 'free' ad. People with big dreams & won't get the job done - it didn't cost _them_ anything, but you will still have the building. I'd suggest a relative would want the building, but falls into that catagory so I won't even bring it up.....

Value the iron in it, & charge at least that much.

Be sure to spell out _exactly_ your deadline, and what happens if it is not met. Many people who do such things tend to overextend themselves, and deadlines slip by. you need a real good, signed, understanding on this. :)

You should be able to sell it, Construction jobs are dwindling this time of year, so a few people will have free time. Here in Minnesota such buildings are dismantaled all the time, sold at farm auctions. Is it wood pole barn or steel inside? You probably mentioned, but I read too many replys to remember now... ;)

It seems to be a fact of life these days that it is far easier to sell something than it is to give it away. If nothing else, list it on eBay, somebody will want to buy it.
