I bought some 8 ft strip lights the other day, no bulbs, but I had plenty at home. Opened them up to run new wireing out and the ballast says T-8.Question is will this ballast run the old style bulb and if not what is the advantage of the new style because they are twice as high. Locals want $9 per bulb. Thanks

Bit of interesting reading on the new T8 lamps-
The big news is that the ballast is electronic, the tubes use less energy, put out almost the same light.

Don't worry the T-8's will pay for them selves. Safer in the shop to as they won't strobe at 3600,188,1200,900 rpm etc. Better cold starts too.

Are these the smaller diameter guys with the green caps? If so, the company where I work (er ah used to work, tee hee) just changed every bulb in the plant and that had to be in the thousands?

Building my new shop in a couple of weeks and that question came to mind.

Thanks,

Mark

Advantages, more light, no hum from the electronic ballast, less current consumed and less heat given off.

8 ft T12 fixtures tend to hum alot, very annoying. T8 should be virtually noiseless.

Can the older T-12 and newer T-8 tubes and ballasts be mixed and work. Yes, usually. Will they work well and/or long? Rarely. Read the ballast label and use only the lamp type and size listed for best results.
