Has anyone used one of these needle scalers to remove paint from frames and castings on tractors? If so how did it do and how long do the needles last. thanks

In the Navy we had a saying "If it's female and moves f--- it, if it's rusty and doesn't move then paint it" Needless to say there were always alot of objects that were rusted and needed painting. We used needle scalers day in and day out getting stuff ready for paint. I spent two years apiece on both of the ships I served on and never had to replace the needles in any of our scalers in that amount of time, even with the heavy use they saw.

Rather than paying the usually high price for a dedicated one, I bought one from HF that screws on my air hammer and I've had pretty good luck with it. Not much good on thin paint but works good on thick paint, rust and for cleaning up welds.

I have one and use it on my stuff. I've had good results, especially when something has heavy rust or multiple layers of paint. I've had mine several years and use it off and on, but not everyday by any means, haven't broken any needles yet.
We have several at work. They are much better built than my Northern tool special. They do need needles replaced from time to time, but they see a LOT harder use than mine at home ever sees.
BTW, it's the cat's you know what for cleaning slag off a weld.

I too have debated buying one, for cleaning weld slag. Now that I know its the cats MEOW for doing that I'll probably go ahead and get one.

Ditto on that one. I was also going to use it for my wheels. Thanks to all for answer to a question I had but not asked.

I use one all the time for heavy paint especially on cast parts. It needs a heavy object to hit against to do the best work. Needles will last forever just for home use-however it does take a good air compressor to keep up. Jack
