tool drawer liner

Some of my mechanics have tool boxes so disorganized and they are always fishing for the right tools. Some of them have a liner they got from Craftsman-a foam pad 1/2" thick where they cut out the shape of the tool. This looks real good but, at $10-12 a drawer, fairly expensive. I took a sample of this and found what looks like the same stuff in blue. It was at Walmart, and labeled as a 1/2" thick camping mat. At $6 for a piece 2" wide by 6" long, I bought a roll for each mechanic to line their drawers.
Anyone ever try this stuff, and do you have any other good ideas about tool organization in roll around tool boxes?

Back about 35-40 years ago, i bought a nice Craftsman bottom box, 5 drawers, and a lift-up door on the bottom. Nice husky casters and straight wheels. box still works good. What did i use for drawer liners? Ordinary corrugated paper board! Yep, made them from paper board boxes! How good did they work? Great! How long did they last? They're still in there, and still in good shape! and, they didn't cost me a dime! And the box? Still works good, the drawers are good, too, always pull out and push in, with proper lubrication! And, i keep lots of tools in there! One thing i did--i installed an electric 2 plug box on the side, and hung a long extension cord on it, wired into the box! That way, my extension cord never wandered off if i wasn't there! Then, i made up a long extension light cord, with the wire run thru 2 eye-bolts, bolted thru the flange of the work bench, and it never wandered off either! by: Rustyj

Have you tried Lowe's for a price on drawer liner? I didn't like the price they had at Sear's for the liner and the size of the roll (it was cut to size for a chest. I have bought two rolls of the stuff and have lined three boxes and still have enough left over to line my small one that I carry with me. The foam pad works very well. We use it at work, and it makes it a lot easier to see if a tool/item is missing from the box. I am in the military and work with aircraft so tool accountability is a necessity.

later days mate,
Jim

snap-on sells a liner that works great. you can really slam the drawers shut hard and the tools don't move, and it's oil and chemical resistant. kind of spendy but it's worth it.

I have used some left over carpet pad. Some are flat and some corrugated. Maybe some could be found at a carpet store.
