I am working on a project that requires about $50,000 worth of large stainless steel bolts. Does anybody have a good source to purchase such items from? I am looking for 316 SS bolts & nuts varying from 5/8" x 4" up to 1-1/2" x 7-1/2". I have tried McMaster-Carr and they are more expensive than our local vendor. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Another supplier you could try is:

I have done business with them in the past and found their prices to be better than local suppliers.

For what it is worth, you might want to try a couple of sets of bolt-nut combinations to see if you can cause a tight joint at whatever torque specs you plan to use. This combination can seize permanently and not be at proper bolt tension. Then about the only way to take them apart is plasma arc. As other posters have mentioned, use anti seize liberally. I would not think brass or bronze nuts would produce much tension--just depends on how much is required of the joint. Just my .02 worth.

I thoroughly agree with you about the brass and the stainless galling. I guess the only good part about the situation is that it will become the property of a public works agency and we should never need to take things apart. They spec'd it and they will have to maintain it. It would be much easier to burn off regular old iron bolts than it will the stainless.

If you can"t find these fasteners, I work for a machine shop that has idle time on our turning equipment. The boss has been talking about selling the lathes and I know he will sell the time on them pretty cheaply. If you have to certify the fastner grade this approach may not work however.

You may contact me via e-mail

Depending on the size of the bolts, could you have them made by a machine shop. I have made specialty bolts in my tool room at work. Mostly steel (alloy hardenable) What sizes of bolts are you looking for? If you are looking for a size that will chuck up on a toolroom lathe then I would think that a shop could give you a better price then some distrubutor that is marking it up 50%.

No space shuttle here, just 26,000 feet of 42" water main. The bolts are for flanged piping, valves, fittings, etc. Each 42" flange takes like 20 ea 1-1/2" x 7-1/2" bolts. At something like $40 per bolt and $8 per nut, it adds up quick. Thank God that we aren't required to use SS for all the buried mechanical joint fittings on the job!

I have never built a job where SS bolts were used with SS nuts. I would not want to be the poor guy that has to replace a valve 15 years down the road. With proper graphite lube, the may do fine, but chances are they will be assembled in less than ideal conditions and the lube won't be up to snuff. Everyone else uses brass nuts on SS bolts for these applications.

You might give Jamestown Distributors a call at 800-423-0030. They specialize in stainless and bronze fasteners. Although they don't list anything in 316 SS over 1/2", I'll bet they can quote a price, given the quantities you need.

I don't think they carry Stainless, and all their material is imported but try EARNEST PRODUCTS, or maybe it's EARNEST MACHINE PRODUCTS, in Davenport, IA. I used to buy some BIG heavy hex nuts from them, 2-3/4"-12 TPI. I forget what the ASTM spec was but they were hot forged alloy steel. Also look for a place called BBC Fasteners, last address I have was 4210 Shirley Lane, ALSIP, IL. 708-597-9100. BBC stands for Blank Bolt Corp. They made the anchor bolts for the Sears Tower. Last bolts I bought there were 1-1/2"-12 X 38" long with a 50 Deg. plowbolt head on them. Good company to work with.

Hi 720Deere,

Copper State Nut & Bolt. Most major cities.

If your buying ASTM or ANSI certified, then the price is very expensive. The cheaper priced most likely won't be to any USA standards. Just wanting you to compare apples with apples on pricing.

Thanks T_Bone! I have prices now from one of our water & sewer supply vendors and he has everything per specification. This is the odd sort of thing that these guys do not usually deal in and I know how this guy works. He is more than glad to get the non standard items for you, but he usually makes 30+% on them. We will probably make the purchase through him, but I want to make sure that I'm not paying an extra $10k for the convenience.
