I"d like to find a thick oily grease that will work in my old Bush Hog rotary cutter with leaking gearbox. Is there a mix-my-own combo that I can use? I"ve tried removing the box, but I don"t have any heat and the nuts won"t move. Thanks

I have a woods 7' mower that was leaking out the bottom, so i put oo grease in it. That was about 8 years ago and it's still working ok and haven't had to add any grease . I mow 60 acres CRP ground with it each year. OO grease is about the same thicknes as STP oil treatment is.

Wow everyday you learn something! All kinds of grease out there. My $.o2 worth is go to a good lawnmower supply. Snapper will have this and it works in a lot of stuff. They use a green slim grease in the transmission. That is "0" and the thicker stuff is tan and is "OO". Check it out. jeffcat

I've seen this done many times and the end result is always a torn up gearbox. It may not do it today or tomorrow, but in the long haul it's not a matter of if it'll go out, just when. If you ever look in a gearbox like this that has been filled with grease the first thing you'll notice is the grease has been slung to the outside of the box and isn't really doing much of anything. If you get it thick enough to stay on the gears your not gonna have any lube to the bearings, if you get it thin enough to lube the bearings it's gonna do just what I said above or maybe even go ahead and run out like the regular gear oil is doing. Finally if you were to pack in enough of the thick stuff to where it can't fly off to the outside then the gears are gonna be running in it all the time and it'll eventually start heating up and that isn't good either. It might be a pain in the a-- to do, but you'll be money ahead to bite the bullet and change the seal.

Use what thurlow said. Lots of folks around here use it all the time in that application and for the same reason you want to.

if its leaking down under the mower, take that great big nut off and the bushings will drop out, can replace the seal with gearbox in place

I think its about 1 3/8, use 3/4 drive with lots of pipe, lock the pto solid and grunt, lots of swearing helps too

Fix your leak first of all, Never lost a gear box filled half and half with gear oil and Lucas Oil Stablizer.

You cant use grease in a gearbox that calls for gear oil.It wil not lube between the gears and the shaft properly.Even if juryrigged you should try to stop the leak itself to allow the proper lube to do its job.Buy the hand propane torch. They are cheap and a must have to do any maintenance work.Just an opinion.

John Deere sells what they call 'Corn Head Grease', this type product is also available in other brands. I am sure this is what you are looking for.

Keep soaking those nuts with a good penetrating oil,and try a little pressure all along. It will take more than a few days to get them loose.

I would use John Deere corn head lubricant. That's what they use in corn head gear boxes.
