Ive got a line on a 12" swing 16" between centers logan metal lathe. I think it may be in the $400 range, if your interested in one still, Ill find out more. With the short bed, this one may be able to ship in pieces and make it via fedex for pretty cheep.

J Puleo,Went to the machine shop I worked at in the past to have the guys measure some brake drums. They had a new ,huge milling center all Chinese said it took a couple weeks for a specialist to"Americanize" it for them.Surprised a shop making aircraft tools and parts bought such a thing. There goes more dollars to China. Not trying to change the subject, just thought it was interesting.

After working in the machining world for several years, I've got some news for you....virtually all small machining & turning centers, small lathes (<18"), and milling machines are made overseas. After Bridgeport went bankrupt, there was no longer a choice. Even "Bridgeports" which flaunt American flags on the side have the base castings imported from Tiawan.

So when you are suprised that the shop bought a chinese machining center, they most likely didn't have too many other choices.

I don't know if you can buy even large machines now that are American made. Even Ingersoll Milling Machine, the largest machine builder in the world, ( 10 years ago ) went bankrupt and was bought up by the Chinese. An American engineer for them told me that they could build the machines in China, delivered here, for less than 30 cents on the dollar! I haven't seen a new Cincinnatti machine in years and was told that they had sold out too. LeBlond Lathe sold out to Makino years ago. The last Leblond lathe was sold about 1985. Any market they enter they dominate. Easy.

Its a country that has more grunts in their infantry than we have citizens.
