Other than 8 point sockets, do they make square sockets for removing square head pipe plugs? I've got a couple of old Wisconsin V4's at work that are a booger to get at the oil drain plug on.

If you have a source, I'd appreciate it.

TIA...

I just bought 2 5 pc sets from Sears online catalog. One was 3/8" drive other was 1/2". The local Sears stores didn"t/wouldn"t carry them and had to order them online $5.00 for shipping and $5.00 each. I was not going to pay the Snap-on price.

Yes they make square sockets.I pick up a set in a home made wooden box for a whole $5 at a yard sale about 8 years ago.Had been looking for a set for a long time.

8-point sockets fit a square head perfectly, that"s what they are designed for. You can buy single ones off the shelf at Sears for less than $5 each.

I agree, the drive end of a socket gets the job done real well. Hammer the socket onto the plug and use a hex (Allen) wrench to turn the socket.

Why go to all that trouble, just use an extension with an adjustable wrench on the square drive end.

I second the tip on using the drive end of a 3/8 or 1/2 inch socket. Inexpensive way out.

Yup. Except the one I need the most is a 7/16ths.

Priced a set through my local tool place, about $100. Don't think so. Was able to order the 7/16ths as a single item for under $10, and I'll use the extension trick for 3/8 and 1/2. That'll cover 99% of my requirements.

Looking at the Snap On tool catalogue you have a choice of 8 point in 1/2 inch drive or 4 and 8 point in 3/8 drive.
3/8 drive 4 point sizes 1/4" - #PP408A, 9/32" - #PP409A, 5/16" - #PP410A, 11/32" - #PP411A, 3/8" - #PP412A. $12.70 each. 3/8 drive 8 point sizes 1/4" - #F308 = $10.20, 5/16" - #F310 = $9.80, 3/8" - #F312 = $10.25, 7/16" - #F314 = $9.85, 1/2" - #F316 = $10.20, 9/16" - #F318 = $11.55, 5/8" - #F320 = $12.15. Or set 207FY, (F308 thru F320 7 pcs) on a socket rail with clips for $78.00. 1/2 drive 8 point sizes 3/8" - SW412 = $14.40, 7/16" - SW414 = $14.40, 1/2" - SW416 = $14.45, 9/16" - SW418 = $14.50, 5/8" - SW420 = $14.80, 11/16" - SW422 = $16.20, 3/4" - SW424 = $20.05, 13/16" - SW426 = $22.70, 7/8" - SW428 = $26.50, 15/16" - SW430 = $27.75, 1" - SW432 = $28.95. Or set 311ASQY, (SW412 thru SW432 11 pcs) on a socket rail with clips for $220.40. Not cheap but I have both the 3/8 & 1/2 inch drive 8 piont sets and wouldn't be without them. I've never rounded a head on a pipe plug with one. Many of the sizes also work great for use on thread taps or easy outs, especially when you need an extension to reach the hole to be threaded.

Depends on size you need, but I have used old sockets and just used the drive end for the square plug. 1/2" or 3/4" drive will fit most common. Did this on older square head lag bolts also.

I put together a set of old ones from yard sales and flea markets. I do think that snap on and others make them $$$

Why not replace the drain plugs with hex-head pipe plugs, and you won't have to scramble for the special socket every time?

Try 6 point sockets. I use them all the time on square headed plugs. You may have to shop around but they are cheaper than Snap-on's.
