If you are referring to the bolts that bolt the inner cv joint to the drive flange on a front wheel drive vehicle such as VW uses, they are called triple square. You were correct that they have twelve points. They come in 6mm., 8mm.,10mm., and 12mm. I have the 8mm. one to fit my VW Rabbit. My son has the 10mm. for his Audi. They are available from Snap-on. The prices are from the Oct. 2003 price list.

3/8 drive 6mm FTSM6E $20.65
standard 8mm FTSM8E 20.65 length 10mm FTSM10E 23.95

3/8 drive 8mm FTSM8LE 22.95

1/2 drive 10mm STSM10E 24.50
standard 12mm STSM12E 26.50
length

1/2 drive 12mm STSM12LE 27.50

hope this is what you are looking for

The bolts with the 12 point head are called ferry head and can be turned with any kind of 12 point wrench the same size as the diameter of the bolt.

If they have twelve points than you can take them out with your average, everyday wrench/socket/whatever. Wrenches, sockets, etc typically come in 6 point, 12 point, and 8 point (for square fasteners) designs. You can buy any one of them although the 12 point seems to be the most commonly available. I haven't seen a metric twelve point bolt yet, but that's not to say their not being made. Usually if it's metric it'll actually look just like a torx but the torx shape is external instead of internal. If by chance thats what you've got you can get a set of sockets to fit them from NAPA, etc. Hope this helps.

Hello fireman3,

Are these external? If they are external, that you are looking at, it sounds simular to the clutch bolts I have run accross on a few IH tractors and loaders. You will need a 5/16" box end wrench or socket to remove and install them with. Hope this helps out.
