I have lost one of the 4 leveling screws for the base of this level (Craftsman #2H19556) and can't seem to locate a new one. The threads are kind of rare (1/4'-32), so the local machine shops don't want to build one for less than $100.00. It has a 1" thumbwheel about 1/4" from the end. Any ideas where I might find one of these? Thanks!

If all else fails, tap out the hole to a national fine thread for a bolt that you have available and works.

Gary,

don't know where you're located... but look in the yellow pages for "surveying" equipment and repair... somewhere close by is a company that rents/aligns and repairs transits and such... they should have the screw or can make one for you... they are usually old established companies... the one here in Birmingham is in its third generation... good folks that know their instruments... if they don't have the screw, they might have an old parts instrument with the same thread count...

hope it helps
john

Can't help you with the screw but there is a vintage Sears transit level on eBay for about $10.00. Just looking at the picture it probably has the screws that you need.

Gary --

There's an excellent chance that your Craftsman transit level was built for Sears by Berger Instrument Company of Boston.

Berger Instrument is now owned by Chicago Steel Tape (CST) -- as is Berger's historical competitor in the builder's instrument business, David White -- and new Berger-branded builder's instruments are still being made.

I suspect that CST can provide a replacement footscrew for you, but I don't know if they will sell direct or make you go through a survey-instrument dealer.

Any search engine should turn up Chicago Steel Tape's website easily.

John

Yes, I have checked through the Sears website, as well as talked with a customer service rep by phone with no success. I am currently waiting for a response from customer service. It's not that they haven't tried, they just haven't found one. Thanks!

That number may be a sears cat./merch. or store number, rather than a craftsman Model number. I have ran into that situation before. Seems most craftsman mod. numbers start with a 3 number prefix and then a period. Followed by several numbers.

I've discovered that the number I have is the stock #, there are no other #'s on it. I looked at E-Bay, and I think the posts about the manufacturer were correct so I'll start digging tomorrow. I saw several with identical screws. Thanks for all the help!

As of 1998, Rutland Tool, a division of Airgas had 1/4-32 dies for $11.75. #2108-0175. They have all sizes of dies. www.rutlandtool.com. I guess I didn't buy enough as I no longer get the catalog.
