I have a perplexing problem. This chainsaw is five months old and has about 10 tanks of fuel through it. Most of the fall cutting was small clearing work, but now i am doing alot of continuous firewood cutting and when i run it out of fuel and re-fill it i can barely get it to run again.
It acts like it is not getting any fuel. I usually have to get it to fire on full choke but when you switch to open throttle start it will rev up and quickly stall. I can then get it to start on normal run position but as soon as i hit the throttle it will be starved for fuel and quit.
I have tried letting it run for five minutes at idle but it makes no difference.
I have been able to get it started and keep pumping the trottle until i get it up into higher rpm without stalling and it will then run normal.
It starts cold and runs fine. I have had to increase the idle twice since it was new as it would stall. The fuel pickup is clear.
If i shut it off before running out of fuel it will start fine. I assume that these have a fuel pump in the carb. I also have a farm boss that has always worked fine.
Any ideas?
Thanks,

My Stihl 029 just started doing the same thing. Will start and idle and as soon as I pull the throttle it seems to run out of fuel... I repalced the Filter and spark plug and checked the fuel line, still no luck. I hope someone has the answere for this..

What kind of fuel/oil are you using???
If you are using fuel with alchohal in it, it can really create some big problems in two cycle engines. The alchohal will dry the oil out of the diaphrams, make them hard, then they will not pump fuel no matter what you do. You might also taek off carb, move the metering lever up just a little, this will allow a little more fuel to be pump when the diaphram pulsates. Also, as Van pointed out, Stihl have a terrible time with pulse lines and fuel lines getting hairline splits in them. We replace more Stihl fuel lines and pulse lines than any other brand we work on.

Check the pulse line from the carb to the crankcase. These crack or split sometimes and cause some of the symptoms you have.
