Hi All- had a little experience i wanted to share. I got an 88 full size blazer that i use for my partime lawn service and plowing my driveway so it doesnt get a lot of miles. A while ago I replaced the rear brake pads. Went to have the drums turned and they wouldnt do it as there was not enough meat left to turn them. Well the half of me that is Scotch (not Dewar"s) decides to forgo new drums. (mid you the drums also had rivet grooves) I figure - hey its only a part time work truck..I can just put new pads on and be ok for a few years..and Ill save some $$$. The pads will just wear into the grooves. You Brake pros out there probably figured out what happens next.. Yes over time the pad wears into the groove, but the drums are thin and heat fast. For whatever reason the drum and the "raised bump" worn into the shoe can cause EXCESSIVE THUMPING resulting in more heat down there. About 7 miles from home it happens, truck shaking violently, barely make it home at 10mph. Get out and I cant ever touch the drums they are so hot. Yep- those axle seals are shot. I only pray the bearings are not. As they say... hindsight is 20/20. All this to save a few bucks. Needless to say new drums are on order.. Just

Around here, you can't get druns or rotors turned anymore. Last summer I changed the rear brakes on my truck and Autozone, Advance and Napa all said they had gotten rid of their brake lathes as manufacturers had started recommending new new drums and rotors each time.

Of course I was suspicious so I asked a friend that works in the service dept of the local Pontiac dealership. he said it was true that car manufacturers now advised against turning rotors and drums.

Can you believe this? When I went to Advance Auto, I asked the woman behind the counter if she would measure the inside drum diameter so I would know how much they had worn down. She said "I really don't know much about brakes, how do you measure it?"

I took the 4 rotors off my 93' Eldorado to be turned. It would have cost $10 each. went to Autozone and bought new $14.00 each. Frugal I am $16 stupid I'm not. Even solved what I thought was a wheel balance problem.

Sometimes we do learn our lessons the hard way. Seeing as how I really despise doing brake jobs I always make sure the job is done as right as possible the first time, that way I don't have to dig into it again. Just for the record, I learned the hard way that it is always a good idea to either rebuild or replace the slave cylinders while its apart.
