I just picked an old forney thats in pretty good shape except there is what looks like a battery inside that's no good. The guy I bought it from called it an "acid box." Anyone know if that's part of the charger or welder and if it's replaceable? Thanks!

I am looking to buy a Forney welder like you are talking about. The front still has all the markings. Do you still need the pic? I want to know did you get yours to weld or not?

We too had a Forney , didn't have the charger, but it plugged in 2 of the heat range taps and did not use the ground. A garage used to clamp his batteries on this way without the charger , but must've known what he was doing and not for long. Would seem like they were charging batteries by induction off the coils, but don't know and maybe there was a rectifier in the charger. Ours was a 180 amp and there was a duty cycle on back of case with the voltage which would be a decal I believe on the case. Being a copper wound unit it was higher. The salesman said you could leave them weld continouse with them, but if you checked the manual it did have a duty cycle and on the low end was very high.

I have 3 of these Forney welders. 2 have the chargers. They are about a good an AC stick welder as you can get. They have a good stable arc and a good duty cycle.
I bought one for $10 from a junk pile and the other for $50. Both needed the capaciter inside replaced (It's a motor run capacitor). It's about the only thing that goes wrong on these welders. The other welder I paid $100 for many years ago with all the accesories. I have seen them for as much as $150 .

The charger is the only part that is DC. These are really good welders and are almost destruction pruf. They don't really have a duty cycle like you will read about on newer welders. These box welders were built and designed for rural power supply way back when which brings me to my next line.

The best part about them is you can use the 180 amp setting all day and do it on a 30 amp breaker per leg. I have two of these, one has the charger and one doesn't. I bought my first one in 1974 and it was an old welder then. THe local Co-op in Nebraska had started selling Century welders and a farmer traded his in for a new one. About a month later he wanted his old Forney back.

I have a soft spot for the old Marquette's to. Bought one at a yard sale here a couple months ago for $50.00. A Forney that works is easy worth $100.

I have a 3rd revised edition Forney arc welding manual that i got when i bought a box of old books. This book has all of the info of how to use the welder battery charger. If you would like me to scan the pages of the battery charger, e-mail me. PS sorry i will not sell the book.

My Dad bought one back in the mid fifties and I bought one from the mid sixties. Both are very similar. 180 amps with a bunch of plug taps for selecting amperage. Strictly AC. Copper windings; a definite plus. I love mine but would like an AC/DC.

I thought about buying one of those add on rectifiers to get DC out of mine. Wish I'd been at the local auction where 2 Lincoln Ideal Arcs went for $100.00 each.
