Got an empty 30 pound R-134A refrigerant tank. Is it possible to make somthing useful, such as a air tank, out of it? If so, is it possible to adapt the threads on the tank fitting to a standard thread? Any ideas welcome!

Hi Does any one know if welding on these disposable freon tanks creates any kind of dangerous gas?? I can not find any information on this. The tanks are empty and purged.

when you put guages on a new 134a tank it has about 70 pounds of pressure.

A fella down the road uses all of my empty 30 pounders for catch'n turtles for soup.

Tie a string on the handle, put a fish hook on the end of the string. Use raw bacon as the bait. Throw entire rig into the farm pond.

One day, when you do not see the empty can floating, rest assured you have a soup turtle on the hook.

I am not sure about the spca, though.

Hope this helps.

Current tanks, after EPA regs took effect(venting, recovery, use, certification to buy, ect),can't be pumped into thru the factory valve. They have a green handle.Got to cut & tap or weld to it.Regs say recover, drill a hole & dispose. Also Fed regs about transporting refilled tanks(see side of can). That said,I know more regs-please don't kill the messenger.Personally I don't like the corrosion factor.

They make excellent hydraulic reserve tanks when adding hydraulic items as loaders etc.

Hi Jake,

Refrigerant cylinders contain a 500psi rupture disc for a safety device when the cylinder has too much pressure. You can not use them on the high pressure side of the system.

A coworker and I used to slice them longways in the horizontal band saw and weld little angles in to hold a piece of mesh for a mini portable grill.Actually that was freon tanks.Made a cute little grill for watching motocross races etc.Probably ingested some type of poison in the burgers, however,I didnt die yet.Since then a Taiwan grill would be alot cheaper than that and not worth the time and effort even with free welding gas and shop use.

If it's like a 20lb bbq tank, saw it in half below the center seam. Cut an 1-1/2" hole in the bottom and weld in a 3-4" length of pipe/heavy tubing. You will have a heavy duty, bullet proof funnel.
Do the same with the top for a different size pipe. A 3" pipe will fit a DWV sewer pipe access.

I've used more then one of the to make air tanks out of. Only problem I ever had was the shut off valve didn't hold up well but for a quick fix of air it will still work well. Or you could also pump it in for a little more reserve on a lager compressor system

Around here you cant leave any kind of tank laying around, meth makers like them. Seen people lose the gas tanks right off the grills.

If refrigerant dealer won't take it scrap it. Heard of lots of injuries and people even killed from using those as air tanks. Use to be a common thing to see them sold that way but illegal now. Metal is too thin to chance much pressure.

The 134A has a higher pressure than most air systems. The problum comes when water enters with the air, then in time it rusts the bottom thin and explodes.

They used to sell a kit to convert them to a portable air tank. May not be available anymore, since common sense seems to have gone the way of $1.00 gas.

Hello The only thing you can do with it ,after it is completly empty is to take a pick or axe and chop a hole in the side and discard it. DH
