Is it possible that one of the batteries has a shorted cell and therefore the other cells are being overheated when charging? This will cause a strong odor. The charger will probably indicate that it is still charging heavily after a period of time when a good battery would be fully charged.

Duh: That smell was hydrogen sulfide which does smell like rotten eggs or sulphur. It is best to charge batterys in a vented place as this gas is also EXPLOSIVE and all it takes is a spark and kablooie you just got a battery acid bath.
BTW did your battery charger come with an instruction manual?

robert ,I'd like to thank you for your non- condesending response.
I'm sure your a wealth of knowledge and have read every instruction manual you have ever received.
I,not being as intelligent as you, neglected to read that manual, just plug er in and flip the switch is what I do.
P.S. Robbie your DUH! comment was uncalled for, and reminds me of my 11 year old son,who I expect it from!!

That was very nicely put Phil . I always hated that duh crack . I smacked my teenage daughter in the mouth once for that . I know now that I could've been put in jail for it ; but she never did it again . I'm glad you found your problem with the smell . It would scare me too . Ken

Phil,

Your response to Robert was not too swift either. While I agree he could have phrased it differently, what he said was the truth. If you don"t know what you are doing, quit doing it before you blow up your self and/or one of your loved ones. If your eleven year old had unhooked one of the charger leads with all that gas around and created a battery explosion, he might never have said "DUH!" to you again in your lifetime.

Then you would think "there oughta be a law".

THINK! THINK!!!!

Actually, no, his post was not correct. Hydrogen Sulfide is not explosive. The explosive potential comes from the hydrogen gas generated from the electrolysis of water in the battery. I do, however, agree that the hydrogen sulfide smell is a good indicator that a lot of electrolysis of water is happening rather than charging of the battery.

I beg to differ Salser. Hydrogen Sulfide IS explosive. I work in an oil refinery and we use hydrgen in our process to take out the sulfer. If H2S ever gets out of the pipes it is deadly to breath and if it finds an ignition source. It is part Hydrogen which is very flammable, and sulfer burns too. Even in small amounts it can cause a serious flash fire and or explosion.

Well put Salser, was wondering if anyone was going to put out the correct info on hydrogen gas being produced when charging ANY battery. And that was the potential for an explosion...Have a good day

Keith

Hi Phil,

And since you could smell the hydrogen sulfide or is it sulfur dioxide, you can plan on all your tools in your shop rusting very bad. You might want to wipe them down with a oily rag before that happens.

hydrogen sulphide also called H2s is a toxic gas that is generated by decomposing organic matter, such as manure and paper pulp, it can be fatal in high enough concentration in confined spaces. It has a rotten egg smell, not odorless like methane. sulfur dioxide has a slighly sweeter smell, but it still stinks, sulfur dioxide is more tolerable than H2S but is also deadly at lower concentrations. Just a little science FYI

Hi Rick,

I was doing a plant remodel at Tree Top apple juice company back in the 70's and they used sulfur dixoide as a preservative under a hood. Of course the hood leaked like a seive.

I was horse for 6mths after that job and refused to go back on another remodel job the next year.

The crap we used to have to work in was amazing. Lucky to be alive.

Hi, T_Bone

A friend of mine who is a retired welder (North Slope, Satsop nuclear reactor [the little engine that couldn't],etc)once expressed the opinion, "We sell our bodies too cheaply." I was asking him if he had had any parts replaced; he'd had more than a few.

I've had four relatively easy surgeries on my hands and wrists (two so I could get my hands open every time I closed them, two to get back the feeling in my right hand, and keep my left from getting completely that way), surgery to make my gut stop coming out of my abdominal wall, and I'm going to need work on my shoulder joint, and one or more new hips unless I can figure out some way to sit quietly for the next thirty years. At least some of these problems occurred or got worse while I was working for pay that would make our elected aristocrats in D.C. consider me the scum of the earth. We do sell our bodies too cheaply.

Anybody who works with his hands and back has experienced more discomfort and outright pain than anybody with a desk job can begin to imagine. I wouldn't trade, though, and I've had the chance. I'm proud of having earned my bad disposition honestly.

Stan
