I have been looking to purchase a wire welder and have been leaning towards a Hobart 140. I have a Lincoln stick welder but need something for thinner metals such as auto body repair, etc. Does anyone have a personal brand favorite or experience with the Hobart 140???

Miller makes both Hobart and AutoArc. We've got an AutoArc 135, same as the Hobart 135. Has Miller right on the box, all the parts are stamped or have Miller on them, and it came with a roll of Hobart wire. We've used it in the barn where we can't get our Miller Thunder Bolt stick welder, and so far the welds have been holding up. Also works great even for just tacking parts together to be welded with the heavier duty stick welder.

Check closely as the top 2 companies, Lincoln and Miller, make branded models for various outlets. For instance, the HD model at Home Depot is the same Lincoln unit that Lowe's sells with a different name on. It is also the same unit that Lincoln sells direct with yet a different name.
I got the one at Lowe's because they had the best price and included a cart for free. It is the highest powered 115 volt mig that Lincoln makes. If you have a stick welder, chances are, this model will fill in the other gaps for you and save some money over the 220 volt model.
I believe the sources do this to stay away from having to match prices. You can tell them it is the same welder but they have a different model number and that is what price matched is based on. Another clever move.

Lincoln. You can get good deals from Home Depot or Summit Racing.

I've been using the Lincoln Weld Pak HD3200. And absolutely love it.
At the time of purchase I think this was the largest lincoln model made with 120 volt input. They claim it can weld up to 5/16 " but I use it for welding up c perlin and lighter materials. I also purchased the $65 kit which allows me to weld aluminum. Really nice piece of equipment for smaller light weight welding jobs. Lincoln carries several smaller less expensive models in the Weld Pak style too. Just depends on what you want it for.

I use a cheap, Century 80 wire-feed on body metal with no problems. I'll upgrade to a Miller when the Century stops working.

I've got a Hobart 135, which is basically the same welder. I just finished welding up the heater case on my project truck, and it worked fine using 0.023" shielded wire. Sheet metal is a bear to weld (at least for me, and I make no claims to being an expert) but the welder is certainly up to the task.

When welding sheet metal, it is a lot easier with gas for a shield instead of shielded wire.

We're saying the same things in different languages. I'm using solid-core wire with shielding gas, not flux-cored wire. I agree it's easier this way.
