anyone know of a good solar fencer that is low impedence so it will operate the tape, the weed choppers will not run the tape. I had one of those American Farmer solar chargers from TSC years ago and it was junk. I notice they carry a new brand now?

The thing to remember with any electric fencer is it's only as good as its ground. Read the fencing manuals and they say use 3 10 foot grounds rods at least 10 foot apart from each other connected with copper ground wire and grounding nuts. Having them in a moist area is preferable. If you still have problems after that then add a couple of wires to your fence and GROUND THEM. Makes a huge difference.

try ValleyVet dot com and look for Parmak brands. They have a really good one, but it will cost you a little over $200, but the real trick to these is using a pretty long ground rod to get down into the soil moisture.

Don't think that would work over east of you CL. We'd have to have about a 40' lead to get down to any moisture, and we'd hit rock before then. Harley

take a 5 gallon bucket of water and after you set the rod, poor the water on top of it, slowly, so that it soaks into the ground. We do this every once in a while during the summer and this year since it is so dry. Works like a charm - been using the same charger for 8 years now.

Hi Ray,

Can you find a battery powered fence charger that works well with tape?

You can buy 5w PV's for under $50, some in the $20 range that would keep a 12v battery charged without any problems. They last from 10 to 20yrs.

If the fence charger runs on 6v, no problem, as you can add another cheap 6v battery in series to make the 12v so the PV will work.

Hi Ray,

I should mention that you don't want a PV more than 5w or you will need to add a charge controller to keep from overcharging the battery's. Under 5w then you can direct connect the PV to the battery(s).

If using a 6v fencer, be sure a buy a good 6v battery to run the fencer off of. The second 6v battery can be any cheap or size(amp/hr) 6v battery to make the 12v required of the PV. You could even series 4 flashlight batterys for the second 6v battery.

A battery pack is only as good as the weakest battery.
If you have two 750 amp/hr batteries and one 350 amp/hr battery hooked together you will only have a 350 amp/hr battery pack. This is like having one weak cell in your car battery.
For best battery life and power supply all batteries should have the same rating.

Hi Scott,

That would be true only in a equal amperage draw configuration.

This circuit on the other hand is a dedicated 6v battery to the fencer. This battery has to be of good quality to orperate the fencer charger requirement.

The second 6v battery is only to make up voltage for the 12v PV. There will be no amps drawn from this battery configuration.

My neighbor thinks the older TSC fencers (black box w/cell on top) run tape pretty well. We share a common fence that he has 3x tape on for horses, but he never has it on. I have a single wire on my side for cows that is on all the time (bout 500'). He is always b1tch1n he gets shocked at his barn (like a HV capicator bite)). :^} I have offered to power his tape (disconnect the shared area and put his tape on mine line) so there would not be any curent up at his barns but he is afraid his horses will get shocked????? ?

With all the stuff at TSC going to horse's, have you looked at the new solar fencers? I sure wouldn't use one for cows, plus I think the last one I looked at said it was for tape. I ended up fixing the old one vs buying a new one. I need the punch and punch it does..... .

I"ve got one of the little solar fencers that I was using for a fence line down by the creek this summer. It didn"t supply enough juice to turn my horses. I"ve moved to a AC powered unit and it"s working just fine. This summer once I re-build my fence I"ll be hanging two strands of electric wire one at the top and one in the middle. My goal is to get the horses rear ends off of the fence and keep the fence line in tack for a good long time. In all honesty I hope that my horse do get zapped a couple of times. To me a little zap is a lot better than a cut from barbed wire that has to be doctored.

I don't mind them gettin' shocked if it learns them, just put up a temporary line in my pasture to keep the horses from moving my mother cows off my alfalfa round bales, have one big mare that decided to be the quality control tester, boy is she pisst, I think she wants to kill those cows on the other side of the fence now. I want the solar charger to run some lines this summer on some leased ground so I can get my cows and calves out on some good pasture.

You might check out Ramm Fence, they've got some pretty big solar powered chargers, I think that the chargers are actually made by Fi-Shock but I'm not sure.
